Thomas Hannon Obituary

Published by Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home on Jun. 30, 2020.
HANNON, Thomas J. Of Rockland, MA, 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 30. Tom was born in Cambridge, MA to the late Patrick and Agnes (Walsh) and was predeceased by his siblings Patricia, Francis, and John Hannon. Tom graduated from Our Lady's High School in Newton, MA and Boston University. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, was a Vietnam Veteran, and was honorably discharged with rank as captain. Mid-life, Tom made the decision to leave hospital administration and pursue his passion – photography. He had a successful business on the South Shore, loved hanging out of a Cessna to get the "right shot", and was a passionate member and teacher of the local arts community. For 15 plus years, he photographed Rockland High School sports teams, proms, and senior portraits. He loved watching birds, photographing nature, listening to music, exploring historical relics and family genealogy, early morning sunrises, hunting for crabs in the sand, good strong black coffee, sweets – eating and making, especially lemon meringue and chocolate cream pies, and Jameson whiskey. He also loved, slyly, playing pranks and spending time with his granddaughters. Tom is survived and missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathy (Kathleen Doyle), Shaun (son) and Kathy Brooks Hannon, Cindy Hannon (daughter), granddaughters Kallie and Katie Hannon, nephews Brian, Mark, and Jay Hannon, and sister-in-law Sr. Mary Anne Doyle, along with extended family in the US, Ireland and England, incredible and fun-loving neighbors, and wonderful childhood Newton Corner friends. Respecting today's public health crisis, Tom's family is holding a small burial service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. A private celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Dear Kathy, please accept my sincere condolences for losing Tom. I think Tom and I were welded at the hip in kindergarten at Our Lady's parish, Newton, and forever afterwards. Living just a few houses away while growing up, we shared the wisdom and humor of our great parents. We played tackle football on the mighty Our Lady's High School team along with several of our best friends and Classmates. When we were about 14, we were fortunate to enjoy a memorable summer vacation together in Marshfield where we suddenly became aware of the complexities of young ladies. Never ones to back down from challenges as Alter Boys, Tom and I took turns racing through the Latin Mass prayers on Sunday mornings in hopes of "beating" the other one to the finish. When Tom and I last spoke for nearly 2-hours in March, I was very glad he let me chat with you. I knew then and there you were his soulmate forever.
Dear Kathy, my heart goes out to you, Shaun, Cindy, and their families.
Let perpetual light shine upon Tom. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Tom was a fun and thoughtful guy. I spent a lot of time with the Hannon Family when I was younger. Shaun and I were pretty close. I was fortunate to be around Tom in Rockland or Rye and while those visits are in the very distant past they are some of the best memories I have as a kid.

He will be missed.

My sincere sympathy to the Hannon Family. Tom was such a wonderful, considerate man, and so talented. He was always willing to help the sports teams and coaches at Rockland High. He always came into the gym with a big smile.

Tom and I worked closely for many years and enjoyed each other's company and conversation greatly. His support and assistance with the WRPS program was most appreciated. I will remember his professionalism, kind demeanor and soft-spoken style. My sincere condolences to Kathy and the entire family.

Sending peace and love to all of the Hannon family. Mr. Hannon was always so kind to all of us kids back in the day at RHS. I still have some of his great basketball photos of our '86 team.

As the years pass we hear more and more of the passing of friends and acquaintances. I knew Tom as the loving husband of my cousin Kathleen, and had rare opportunities to meet with him at family reunions. I pray for his eternal rest and in thanksgiving for the contribution he made to our extended family and most especially to his beloved Kathleen, Shaun and Cindy. May he rest in peace. Father Joe Ferraioli, O.M.I.

Sorry to hear about Tom's passing. I always admired him, when I was a kid growing up in Newton. Tom was a good friend of my older brother, Bernie, & we all went to Our Ladies School. Tom always had a good sense of humor, a quick wit and a friendly smile.

Dearest Tom was my best boyhood friend, who lived directly beside my house in Newton, MA, where we played together, joined the Scouts together, went to local Our Lady's School together from second grade through all of high school where he was the beloved co-captain of the football team, before his life at Boston University and his wonderful Vietnam service in the Air Force, while he made the greatest decision of his career in marrying his loyal and loving Kathy, who stood beside him faithfully always, in life and in death. Tom was a bright and gentle soul, who fulfilled the prayer of St, Francis of Assisi: "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope." God bless you, dear Tom; dear Tom, God bless us.

To my favorite brother-in-law. I will miss you and your wry sense of humor. Remembering all the good times at Rye Beach and how well you cared for my mother's roses, even if she did think you cut them down too much each year. Grateful for the many times you were the photographer for one of our community events. Rest in peace now. Mary Anne, CSJ

Kathy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the memories of all the happy times you had together help you through this difficult time. I am sorry I never met Tom...he sounds like he was a fun person to be around. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about Tom. He was always the best of friends, kind and patient with the rest of us. I came to know Tom at Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham (now a Beth Israel Deaconess operation). Tom worked with my brother Paul Hurley who passed back in 2001, Paul and I were going to the MBA program at Babson so we'd meet at Glover. Tried to get Tom into it but he thought we were nuts, probably true. Bottom line he leaves a legacy of humor, thoughtfulness and a great friend to my brother (who suffered from Frontal lobe dementia which took about 8+ years).
