Thomas Edward Hicks was born on October 4, 1953, in
Wheeling, WV and passed away on March 27, 2026, at Liza's Place surrounded by loving family following a battle with cancer.
Tom adored his family – especially his daughters and grandchildren. Tom's farm was his pride and joy, spending hours tinkering with his tractors and mowers - maintaining perfect blade height and mowing lines. As a thrill seeker, he was an avid sky diver, scuba diver, and skier. He trained for his pilot's license and scratched the top item from his bucket list when he co-piloted a fighter jet 2x! Tom was an avid marksman and outdoor enthusiast enjoying hunting and deep-sea fishing. Tom credited his military service and intensive taekwondo training with giving him discipline and direction in life. Tom served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army, with a tour in Thailand. He went on to retire from both Bayer and as a coal miner. He maintained many close friendships from his professional life.
Tom was a prominent member of The American Legion Department of West Virginia, serving in various leadership roles including Department Adjutant, Department Commander and Membership Chairman. He was also Post Commander for Post #3, Moundsville, a member of the Legion Riders, the Sons of the American Legion, the Moundsville Veteran's Honor Guard, and a prominent supporter of Helping Heroes. He received The Four Chaplain Award – honoring 4 soldiers that gave their lives to save 4 soldiers – as he was considered to be the kind of man who would give up his life for one of his soldiers.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Fred N. Hicks, Sr. and Lucille Silver Hicks, and other close family members.
He is survived by his daughter Christa Hicks, daughter Leslie Hicks (Ken Truman),
grandsons Freddy Hicks and Everett Truman, and granddaughter Jurnee Hicks and
several great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his Aunt Carmela Hazelwood,
longtime companion Mary Ellen Fluharty, and his lifetime best friends Carl (Darlene)
Lucas. Tom and his siblings, Dorothy Scott (Dell), Karen Szczesniak, Fred Hicks Jr., Denise Hicks (Renee), and Amy Clemons were inseparable, and he cherished his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 29, 2026 from 4 - 7 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Ave., Moundsville.
