After a lifetime of unreserved and unashamed devotion to Jesus, Reverend Thomas David Hill, an honored and beloved husband, father, friend, and brother, graduated to heaven and saw his Heavenly Father on Father’s Day, June 18, 2023.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 7, 1967, David was the son of Thomas Marshall Hill and Barbara Wolfe Hill. David married the love of his life, Reverend Amanda Barrow Hill, on August 2, 1998. It was the joy of their marriage to welcome three children; Mason (23), Eliana (18), and Raegan, who is in the presence of Jesus.
David grew up loving gospel music, specifically southern gospel. His song resounded out early in life, and soon David would be honored to have an illustrious career singing in many gospel groups, including the Singing Americans, the Anchormen, Gold City, the Nelons, the Perrys, and the David Hill Trio. In great compassion along that road, Jesus gripped David’s heart in a personal encounter of salvation on February 8, 1996, transferring David’s ministry from religion to relationship. From that day onward, though David’s extraordinary talent would bring him many earthly accolades and honors (including opportunities to sing at the Grand Old Opry, the National Quartet Convention, on Gaither Homecoming videos, and many television shows, and concerts), David’s life would pour out in a constant expression of true, heart-deep consecration to Jesus. He sang before hundreds of thousands of people, yet his love and devotion were for an Audience of One, his Savior. David was a licensed and ordained minister, preacher, teacher, singer, songwriter, and passionate disciple of Jesus Christ.
David graduated from Ferndale Baptist School and went on to achieve his associate degree in sacred literature from Covington Theological Seminary, his bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies, and master’s degree in Biblical counseling from North Carolina College of Theology. David’s unique ability to never meet a stranger, superb communication style, and hilarious, quick wit made him a beloved friend and sought-after minister.
David was a rock of stability and vision to his family. He was fiercely loyal, completely humble, always gentle, and had a never-ending supply of comedic humor. He is deeply loved and will be terribly missed by everyone who ever had the honor of meeting him. The confidence in knowing he is entirely engulfed in the presence of the Lord is comforting. David is home. For him, there could never be a reward greater than to be with Jesus. His life verse, which he quoted often, was Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
David is preceded in death by daughter Raegan Elizabeth Hill, and his father, Thomas Marshall Hill. He is survived by Amanda Barrow Hill, his wife; son Thomas Mason Hill and daughter Eliana Grace Hill; mother, Barbara Wolfe Hill; honorary sister, Stephanie Joy Lindsey; father-in-law, David Walton Barrow; mother-in-law, Dorothy Gail Barrow; and sister- in-law, Stacia Barrow Rotge.
David’s Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 11:00 am at North Palm Church located in North Charleston, SC. The family will receive guests at 10:15 am, and doors open at 10:00 am. Because this is a Celebration of Life Service, the family will not be wearing all black, but instead vibrant colors, which display and celebrate David’s abundant and beautiful life. The family encourages all guests to do the same.
