Thomas R. Hughes, Jr., age 80, passed away on March 3, 2026. He entered Heaven peacefully and is now reunited with Barbara and his loving parents, Thomas R. Hughes, Sr. and Elise Lillian Harris Hughes. He is survived by his cherished sister, Mary Evelyn Hughes Cathey.
Thomas was born on September 25, 1945, in Nashville, Tennessee. Much of his childhood was spent on a farm, surrounded by cattle, horses, towering trees, flowing creeks, and fresh spring water. Those early years shaped the man he would become, instilling in him a love for simple living, hard work, and strong family values. Farm life taught Thomas grit, determination, and a deep appreciation for life’s quiet blessings.
As a young man, Thomas began working at Bernie’s in Nashville, where he met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Johnson Hughes. The two married when Thomas was just 19 years old and went on to share 56 devoted years together. They raised three children: Robert Thomas Hughes, Michael Wayne Hughes, and Stephanie Lynn Hughes Woodard.
Providing for his family was one of Thomas’s greatest priorities. He dedicated 34 years of his career to Shoney’s Commissary, working faithfully as a truck driver and warehouse operator before eventually retiring.
When he wasn’t working, Thomas found joy outdoors. He loved woodworking, gardening, and planting flowers—activities that brought him back to the simplicity of his childhood. He also enjoyed watching old western movies and racing, shooting guns, and listening to the music of Alan Jackson.
Thomas and Barbara were blessed with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who led his family with steady love and quiet strength. Thomas was always present—ready to listen, offer guidance, and share wisdom earned through experience. Many will remember him as an intense yet insightful man, full of love, advice, and unwavering support.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Thomas’s simple but meaningful life on March 13, 2026, at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with services following from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the funeral concluding at 1:30 p.m.
Thomas is lovingly remembered by close family: Hughes, Woodard, Cathey, Ballou, Glasgow and many others who were fortunate to know him.
