Thomas Iltis Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Iltis
March 6, 1944 - October 8, 2025
Thomas (Tom) Charles Iltis of San Antonio, Texas passed away peacefully in his home on October 8, 2025. Born in San Antonio on March 6, 1944, he graduated from Little Flower Catholic School.
On May 4, 1968, he married the love of his life, Rita Theresa Weynand, and they celebrated over 56 years of marriage before her death in 2024. They raised and enjoyed three wonderful sons who are all products of their wisdom and guidance.
Tom was employed by Pitney Bowes for 33 years where he was a Senior Electronics Technician.
In addition to his civilian employment, Tom served his country proudly as a part-time soldier. He enlisted in the Army in 1961, just as the Vietnam war was escalating. He was trained in aircraft maintenance and served with the Texas National Guard as an aircraft mechanic. In 1965, his leadership traits were recognized, and he was selected for Officer Candidate School. He served in leadership positions with the Guard until 1969, when he transferred to the US Army Reserves. There, he served as an instructor and then moved into leadership of the 4164th USAR School, rising to the rank of LTC. His expertise, leadership and guidance impacted many students. He was a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff School and among his decorations are the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Ribbon. He retired in 1993 and was extremely proud of his 32 years of service in the US Army Reserves and Texas National Guard.
In addition to his beloved wife, Rita, Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Vera Etter Iltis, his brother Leonard Frank Iltis, Jr. and his sisters, Mildred Iltis Doyle and Carolyn Iltis Wright. He is survived by his sons, Gregory (Angelica), Steven (Ana) and John (Leana); brother, Alois Iltis; grandchildren Andrea, Emily, and Sophia; and extended family.

Yesterday

I´m so sorry to hear about Tommy´s passing. I am Marie Iltis Haby´s daughter and have a Pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Mom and your grandpa Leon and 3 of us first cousins have had the diagnosis. My surgeon said the family should start testing at age 50. I am registered to do the PanCan walk in April 2026 near San Antonio. I hope to meet after the funeral.
