We celebrate the life of Thomas Jack Key, known affectionately to friends and family as Tom, a man whose adventurous spirit and friendly demeanor left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Born on October 4, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, Tom's journey through life was one of dedication, service, and joy, which came to a peaceful end on December 27, 2024, in
Kyle, Texas.
Tom is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 58 years, Alberta Key of Kyle, who has been his dedicated companion throughout their life's journey. He was a proud father to his children, Denise Blok (Jon) of Kyle; Jacqueline Turgeon (Paul) of Jacksonville, FL; and Chad Key (Rosa) of Imperial, CA. His role as a grandfather to Madison Blok, Riley Blok, Rachel Hauser (Vince), Joshua Key, and Connor Key, and a great-grandfather to Walker Hauser, filled him with an indescribable joy. Tom was the cherished brother to Carol Tidwell (Harry) of Houston and was preceded in death by his parents, Russell (Ted) Key and Wanda Key and his siblings Wayne Key, Kay Fischer, and Jimmy Key.
Tom's life was a testament to the values of hard work and commitment. He graduated high school and began college, but ultimately decided to enlist in the United States Navy in 1966. His dedication to his country was evident in his distinguished service as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. His illustrious career spanned 20 years, in which he was assigned and deployed on various Nuclear Powered Submarines. He was recognized through numerous commendations, including the Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Navy "E" Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and the SSBN Deterrent Patrol Pin with an impressive array of stars. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1986, Tom continued to apply his expertise and work ethic at Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., where he also retired after many years of dedicated service.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom was a man of diverse interests who loved to compete and took pride in all his endeavors. He embodied the spirit of an explorer and the soul of a craftsman. Tom found solace and excitement in hunting, fishing, hiking, off-roading and camping. His love for adventure also extended to water skiing and diving, activities that showcased his physical abilities and zest for life. Indoors, he could be found bowling or watching football (especially the Cowboys), a pastime that allowed him to forge lasting friendships and share laughter. Tom's passion for western books and movies, as well as his keen interest in history, often made him the life of conversations, regaling others with tales and trivia.
Described by those who knew him best as adventurous, handy, and friendly, Tom was a man of many talents. His ability to fix and create with his hands was matched only by his eagerness to embark on new explorations and experiences. His warm smile and genuine interest in others made him a beloved figure with his family and friends.
As we say farewell to this remarkable man, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and the lessons he taught us.
