Thomas P. Lavin, Jr., 82, of
Sarasota, Florida was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather who was called to his heavenly home on February 2, 2026, after a long battle with myasthenia gravis.
Born June 13, 1943, to the late Thomas P. Lavin, Sr. and May Alberta Smith in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Tom was a man of unwavering faith and loving devotion to his family. He shared a lifelong marriage of 58 years with his cherished wife, Claire, with whom he raised three beautiful daughters: Theresa, Michelle, and Mary Beth.
Early in his life, as a young patriot, Tom enrolled in JROTC and later ROTC at Penn State University. After earning his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1965, Tom honorably served in the U.S. Navy for the next 20 years, retiring at the rank of LCDR. At the start of his military career at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, Tom flew P-3 Orion patrol aircraft as a tactical navigator on anti-submarine warfare missions. Operating out of NATO bases including Rota, Spain, and Lajes, Azores, he helped locate and track potentially hostile submarines often originating from the former USSR. Leading a subsequent, two-year pilot project, he successfully converted the VP-66 aircraft maintenance department from chalkboard and paper to computer automation technology. He proudly participated in humanitarian aid missions to Iceland supplying vital vaccines during a viral outbreak. During the widely publicized 1979 Bay of Campeche oil spill, Tom played a critical role charting the 1, 100 square-mile spread throughout the Gulf of Mexico. A career highlight for Tom came through a specialized military contract requiring high-level clearance and several months working on Israeli Defense in Tel Aviv. For the rest of his professional career, he worked extensively in simulations as a test engineer, systems analyst, consultant and contractor in the private sector.
Tom's hobbies were numerous and colorful. He reveled in restoring his Marietta mansion and his two corvettes (including a '67 Stingray which he kept for 52 years) and repurposing or salvaging parts from old electronics. He was a fisherman at heart endlessly casting his nets off the beach or bay. His Mexican adventures through years of family vacations formed infinite treasured memories. At home, he was deeply engaged in news and politics along with a years-long family tree ancestry project spanning 5+ generations. His love for research and learning kept his mind sharp and his wit sharper. His humor was peculiar and clever, speaking in riddles, rhymes or code leaving people puzzled and amused.
Tom's life was a testament to the values he held dear – faith, family, and country. His love and legacy continue through his family and his adored granddaughters: Melinda, Martina, Leah, Jennifer, and Nicole and his siblings: Mick (deceased), Mark, Pat, and Patrice. As we mourn the indelible loss of Thomas P. Lavin, we celebrate a life well-lived, a path well-traveled, and a man deeply loved.
As we bid farewell, we will forever remember his faithful heart through his favorite scripture and sign-off: "John 3:16 is the bottom line.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
