Thomas J. Logue Sr.

Thomas J. Logue, age 94, longtime local attorney in Mattoon, passed away on April 16, 2025 at Savoy Memory Care Nursing home, Savoy, Ill.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 North 21st Street, Mattoon, IL 61938. Burial with Military honors by the V.F.W. Post 4325 will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2025 at Schilling Funeral Home.
Thomas J. Logue was born July 6, 1930 in Pana, Ill. the son of Wayne Edward and Dorothy (Kelligar) Logue. He married Mary Ann Laurent on August 25, 1951 and they proceeded to bring 12 children into this world. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2017.
Survivors include his children, Michelle Jamerson (Paul) Pass Christian, Miss., Bridget Logue Urbana, Ill., Edith Bergman (Mark) Lake Forest, Clif., MaryAnn Bunyan, (Jed) Urbana, Thomas J. Logue, Jr (Geralyn) Westmont, Ill., Kathleen McKenna (George) Holland, Mich., Daniel M. Logue (Anna) San Diego Calif., Gretchen Stevens (John) Wilmington, Del., Hugh M. Logue (Theresa) Gurnee, Ill., and Christopher J. Logue of Mattoon.
In addition to his wife Mary Ann, Tom was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Terence Logue and Celeste Logue; as well all of his four siblings. He once joked that he had outlived all of his enemies.
Mr. Logue was a founding partner of the Glenn & Logue law firm practicing in Coles County from 1956 to 2020. He was an active parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he served as a lecture.
Tom Logue graduated from Marmion Military Academy, Aurora, Ill. in 1948, University of Illinois Champaign Urbana and University of Illinois Law School. As an undergrad at Illinois, he started at defensive back on the JV football team.
He enlisted in the US Army after graduation, serving as a First Lieutenant on the front lines on the Imjin river during the Korean War. While there, he boxed and defeated a Golden Glove champion from New York City wearing his officer's fatigues and boots. Prior to discharge, the US Army invited him to author a manual on Army intelligence.
After the war, he enrolled at the University of Illinois law school where he met Ralph Glenn who he later partnered with to form Glenn & Logue Law.
Following law school, Tom and Mary Ann Logue moved to Mattoon where they brought up 11 children, having lost one infant child.
Tom Logue proudly served as a member, Board of Directors of the Marmion Alumni Association for over four decades later being recognized with the Abbot Marmion Society award, the lifetime achievement award from the same. A loyal alumnus, he sent all five of his sons to Marmion.
Tom Logue loved his family and the Most Holy Roman Catholic Church, often attending daily Mass, praying several complete Rosaries each day. He studied the writing of numerous Catholic mystics, including Anne Catherine Emmerich. He wrote a rebuttal to Time magazine defending the veracity of the Shroud of Turin. A team of Vatican investigators interviewed him for the cause of canonization of an original member of Opus Dei in the United States.
In summer, he loved fishing and boating at Lake Shelbyville with family and friends. In winter, he enjoyed red wine in front of the fireplace, often referring to it as "the boary log". For nearly 30 years, he took his family to vacation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario.
Despite being a conservative, Thomas J. Logue often remarked that he should be considered a liberal because he gave himself the latitude to make up his own mind.
