Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan Funeral Home - Hanover on Jan. 9, 2025.
Thomas Joseph Mackin passed away January 7, 2025, just shy of his 79th birthday. He was born on February 22, 1946. "Tom, Dad, Grandpa" as he was known by his family, passed away at BID Plymouth with loved ones nearby. He was a warrior at heart taking every day, every challenge with a smile and an upbeat attitude cleverly stated with, "It's just another day."
Tom grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Elizabeth and Norman Snr. and brother, Norman Jr. all deceased.
Tom attended catholic school and lived his life by a code of generosity, forgiveness and unconditional love and appreciation for life. He attended Wheeling College before deciding to enlist in the military. He was an officer in the US Army and fought in the Vietnam War. He received an honorable discharge in April of 1973. He was very proud of his time in the military and though the scars of the time spent in Vietnam were deeply felt by him, he took pride in sharing his stories. He proceeded to receive a degree from Boston College and married, Donna Gail Smith on December 27, 1975.
Tom and Donna began their life together as a couple in Stratham, NH. Shortly thereafter, they had a son, Christopher Michael and daughter, Katherine Elizabeth. They moved to Duxbury, MA in 1983.
Tom was a salesman at heart, a person who simply enjoyed new places, new people, and new experiences. He weaved this mindset into years spent working at SS Pierce and through his 30+ years working for Gloria Ferrer Wines.
Tom is survived by his wife, Donna, his children Chris and his wife Jill, his daughter, Katie and her husband Jack and two grandsons, Will, 14 and Andrew, 11. Finally, his beloved dog, Daisy who will forever miss walks in the dog park and bringing joy to those in the hospital that needed cheering up.
Tom had a deep love of photography, and this passion brought him to meet new people, to experience new places and to capture an image that others may not realize the beauty in. He was a volunteer at heart recently showcased in Duxbury Neighbors magazine, February of '21. The caption of the article, "Tom Mackin, Helping People, Help Others" accompanied an image capturing his wife, Donna and their dog, Daisy with a full article celebrating the therapy dog experiences that Tom and Daisy partook in as well as many other charitable organizations where Tom gave of his time and passion.
Tom Mackin found joy in the simplest of things. He was grateful for the kindness of strangers, the compassion of people for their fellow man and for whatever life threw his way. He loved his time spent laughing at jokes with his son, Chris. He found so much joy in hearing the stories of his football loving grandsons and their experiences on the field. He was the giver of pep talks and always encouraged his daughter, Katie with his business and sales background. He was a human connector and a superhero in man's clothing. He will be incredibly missed by his family and friends. The light is a little dimmer in the world since his passing.
Services for Tom Mackin will take place on Saturday, January 18th from 2PM-4PM at Sullivan Funeral Homes, 551 Washington Street, Rte. 53, Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, Tom would want a kind gesture made to those in need. He would find peace in knowing that there is good to come in this world. Be good to each other and this will help his legacy live on.
