Thomas Byron Manter, lovingly known as Tom, passed away on July 8, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on December 30, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, he lived a life rich with talent, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Tom was a multitalented craftsman whose artistry shone brightly in his specialties of upholstery and woodworking. His hands created beauty from raw materials, transforming spaces with his unique vision and loving touch. He took great pride in his work, and many will remember the dedication he applied to every project, be it a piece of furniture or a home renovation.
A member of the Army National Guard stationed in Fort Knox for two years, Tom exemplified the values of service and duty. This experience shaped him into the steadfast and reliable man his family and community cherished.
Tom's personality, though sometimes perceived as serious, belied his true nature. He was ornery, quietly humorous, and possessed a light-hearted spirit that could make anyone laugh. Those who knew him intimately appreciate the joy he found in the little things, such as spending time outdoors working in the yard or indulging his passion for history. His love for decorating their home for Christmas was legendary; each year, he would start the festive preparations right after Halloween, ensuring all the lights twinkled joyfully the day after Thanksgiving. This annual tradition was more than just decoration; it was a reflection of his desire to fill their home with warmth and cheer.
Tom's proudest accomplishment was the life he built alongside Dianna, his beloved wife of 67 years. Together, they created a family rooted in love, support, and cherished memories. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue through his surviving family: his devoted wife, Dianna S. Manter; his sister, Betty Grom; his sons, James Anthony Manter, Ervin Thomas Manter, and Joshua Aaron Manter; his daughter, Jacqueline Sue Manter; and his cherished grandchildren, which total nine, along with 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Their lives have all been touched by his kindness, humor, and love.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Carl David Manter and Flora Alice McGuire, along with his brothers Carl, Harry ,Robert, and Albert, his sisters Jane, Margret, Alice, Joann, Mary, and Julia, and his daughter, Bonita Kay Treadway. Each of these relatives held a significant place in his heart, and their memories will forever remain woven into the fabric of his family's legacy.
In honoring Tom's memory, we celebrate not only his crafts and accomplishments but the profound impact he had on all our lives, his laughter echoing in our hearts. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend who filled our lives with love and laughter.
