Thomas Van Matre

Thomas "Tom" Van Matre passed away on March 3, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 61. He was born in Galveston, TX on January 15, 1963.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Lue Van Matre; his brother, Eugene Van Matre.
Early in his life, he moved to the Rio Grande Valley area with his family and graduated from Sharyland High School in 1981. After high school, he proudly served in the US Army from 1982 - 1985. After returning from the military, he spent some time as an A/C technician and was a USDA produce inspector. A few years later, Thomas joined the team of GM Produce Sales. With his love for selling mangos, he was a dedicated employee for 30 years. He enjoyed being the early bird to work and created many friendships that lasted a lifetime. His loyalty, determination and commitment to the company was never overlooked.
In his high school years, he played center for the Sharyland Rattlers and proudly wore the #53 jersey. He was also a member the FFA and helped construct the Ag Farm. Thomas enjoyed watching football and was an avid football fan - especially rooting for the Texas A&M Aggies and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Thomas was a BBQ extraordinaire. He enjoyed being the weekend outdoor chef for his family. With his amazing BBQ skills, he competed in many cook-offs. He received numerous awards and trophies for doing what he loved to do. Many family members and friends would fight for a jar of "Tom's homemade BBQ sauce".
Thomas is survived by the love of his life, Kelli Hensley and his beloved dog that was always by his side, Daisy Rae. Also, he is survived by his GM Produce Sales extended family and his siblings, Norma Jean Swaim, John Van Matre, Jr., Dorene Chambless, Karl Van Matre, Paula Rogers Jasso. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Committal Service will be held, Friday, March 8, 2024, at 11:00am at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Thomas Van Matre to the Felito Memorial Scholarship Fund, mail to Stephanie Martinez, 627 FM 2844, Santa Elena, TX 78591.
Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission.
