Thomas Richard "Rick" McCommon Jr.

Thomas Richard (Rick) McCommon, Jr. passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 76 in Sherman, Texas after a short illness. Rick, who lived in nearby Pottsboro, was a generous, loving man, passionate in his religious beliefs, wanting to share his love of God with anyone in his orbit. He came to religion later in life and, following in the steps of his mother, was active in his local church, First Lakeway Methodist Church and later Georgetown Baptist Church. He graduated from Lancaster High School and followed onto service with the Coast Guard in California. He moved back to Pottsboro, running a FedEx route before retiring.

For the latter part of his life, he was active in volunteering – with the local school, with his church, with anyone who needed help. Daily he would write out personal Bible verses for friends in need while early mornings would see him at Pottsboro Elementary School where he assisted schoolkids out of the cars and into school. Without fail, he would greet them with a simple smile, telling them "Jesus loves you". He knew that many of the children were raised in difficult circumstances and felt then they should at least have that positive greeting to start their school day. On Sundays, he helped manage the fleet of golf carts to ferry churchgoers from their cars to the church. This he did unfailingly, even on days when the weather was poor, even as he himself was struggling physically. He loved his dog Lexie, his constant companion over the last few years.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Jake Edwards, Georgetown Baptist Church; Virgie Holbrook, Leap of Faith Church; Alan and Teresa Bergquist; and Kaleb, Meg, EvaLee and Vera West whose support to Rick and the family in the last week of his life helped enormously. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn McCommon and David Bond (London, England); his brother Mike McCommon and his family, Sally, Anakin and Adrian (Whitney, Texas).

A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on April 25th at Georgetown Baptist Church.
