It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our father Thomas Graham Melrose, fondly known as Tom, a venerable figure in the field of geology and a cherished member of his community. Born on the 9th of May, 1931, in the quaint town of
West Branch, Michigan, Tom's journey through life was as rich and layered as the very earth he studied. After 94 years of a life well-lived, he drew his last breath on the 31st of December, 2025.Tom was a sergeant in the Army,stationed in Germany during the Korean war.Tom's academic pursuits led him to the University of Michigan, where he earned an advanced degree in geology, setting the foundation for a career that would see him traverse the globe. His work took him to far-flung locales, where he not only explored the geological wonders of the world but also shared his knowledge and passion for ethical practices with fellow geologists through lectures.As the Vice President of Teton Exploration, Tom's leadership was characterized by his intelligence and analytical acumen, qualities that made him a respected figure both within and outside the organization. His commitment to his work was paralleled only by his commitment to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Melrose; daughters Suzy and Diana; his brother, Howard Melrose; and sister, Phyllis DeCaire. Preceding him in death were his daughter Katy and sister Doris Frank, both of whom he held dear to his heart.Outside of his professional life, Tom enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. A lifelong hunter, he often ventured into the wilderness, not just for the sport, but for the profound sense of connection with nature and the camaraderie with family and friends. His love for games was evident in his passion for poker, which he played with a strategist's mind and a sportsman's heart. Additionally, Tom was an avid golfer, a hobby that allowed him to enjoy the outdoors and engage in friendly competition. He enjoyed going for walks with his dogs. His dogs giving him many happy moments. Those who knew Tom would describe him as not just intelligent and analytical, but also incredibly handy. His ability to fix and create was a testament to his understanding of the world, both in the grand scale of geological formations and the minute workings of everyday objects.Tom Melrose leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, compassion, and integrity. His life's work reached across continents, but it was his enduring love for his family. Tom Melrose will be deeply missed, yet his impact will continue to resonate for generations to come.
