Thomas Misener Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 14, 2023.
Misener, Thomas Joseph Wilson
(1942–2023)
Tom slipped away peacefully, at home, on Monday July 10, 2023, at 80 years of age. Beloved husband, best friend and soulmate of Caroline (née Archer) for 53 years. Much loved son of the late Clayton "Dard" and Delma Misener (née Bruneau) of Sault Ste. Marie. Proud and adored father of Clayton and Katie (Chris). Caring Canadian father of Viet (Mytrang) and Ha Son. Cherished grandfather of Alexandra, Paige, Matilda, Hannah, Tom, Christine, Thomas and Marten. Dear brother of Cathy, Nancy (Kevin) and the late Paul. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family, including family in Sault Ste. Marie, Thessalon, Batchawana Bay and other northern Ontario communities. Tom was a kind and gentle man, an adventurer at heart and true lifelong learner. He was a devoted father who took immense joy in watching his children, and later his grandchildren, explore their passions and seek their own paths. Nothing made him happier than seeing his children grow into loving protectors of their own families. As a long-time teacher with the Lincoln County Board of Education and the amalgamated District School Board of Niagara and a summer camp director at Camp Kandalore and Cave Springs Camp, he enriched the lives of countless students and campers, sharing his love of history and providing a safe place where kids could be themselves. One of the highlights of his teaching career was running a popular Outdoors Club that took students on hiking, whitewater rafting and camping adventures. Tom also had a personal passion for travel and spent many happy moments daydreaming about and carefully planning his next adventure, which often included enjoying summer music festivals with his favourite travel companion Caroline. Tom was both a storyteller and an unparalleled listener. He was a voracious reader, but also took great pleasure in hearing the life stories of those around him. He listened lovingly when his children shared the details of their lives and extended that sense of curiosity and affection to their friends and his many students over the years. Tom loved to laugh, enjoyed his daily cryptic crossword and delighted in a good pun (and also the occasional bad one). He was a man with deep roots in his community and a kindness that touched the lives of many people around the world-from Canada to Australia, from Vietnam to Sweden. Tom will be deeply missed by his family, his friends and his community. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. In keeping with Tom's wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 26 Nihan Drive, St. Catharines (between Lake Street & Scott Street), 289-362-1144. Online condolences may be made at CCBSCares.ca

In September 1974, a young Tom Misener offered two history courses at Grimsby & District Secondary School, one on Canadian and the other on American history. Being a history keener, I enrolled in both. One year later, he had transformed an interest into a passion, one that won me that year´s Grade 13 History Award and propelled me into a history degree at McMaster.
That was a wonderful gift from him, but as always with Tom, there was more. Through his Outers Club he also ignited a life-long interest in things and spaces natural. The hikes along Niagara´s Bruce Trail, whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River and camping on the Bruce Peninsula introduced me to new friends, taught me new skills and helped build my growing sense of self-reliance. But there was still more.
After a disappointing conclusion to my university experience, he encouraged me to travel, and that runed into a 14-month sojourn in the South Pacific not dissimilar to a trip he himself had taken years earlier. That time set the path for my future, for when the dust settled a few years on, I to was teacher, I had also married a wonderful Australian and I was now inculcating a whole new generation of students with a love for history and the outdoors. Even today in retirement, I am still supply teach, still working with students in nature and am still very happily married to my dear Australian wife - though with the departure of Joh Bjelke-Petersen it is safer to live in Queensland again.
While Tom would be the first to say we chart our own path in life, the encouragement, guidance, and direction he offered me were significant factors in determining my success in both career and in life - something I am ever so grateful for. I am truly saddened to learn of his passing, but I am proud to have been one of the many lucky students who knew and loved him. As I raise a glass in his memory, I will recall that hearty laugh and beaming, wide smile and that will warm my heart.
Our Condolences to Caroline, Clayton, Katie, and their families.
