Thomas Mitchell Obituary

Thomas A. Mitchell, 86
1937 - 2024
Nahant - Thomas Anthony Mitchell, 86, of Nahant, MA, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 13, 2024.
Tom was born in Boston on October 20, 1937 to Thomas and Mary (Gilligan) Mitchell of County Galway, Ireland, and grew up in Quincy. Tom was the beloved husband of Rita (Panczyk) Mitchell. He was the loving father of T.J. Mitchell and his wife Judy Melinek of San Francisco, Mary Jo Mitchell Angersbach and her husband Paul Angersbach of Nahant, Kristen Mitchell LaPlante and her husband John LaPlante of Swampscott, and Michael Mitchell and his wife Karen of Scotch Plains, NJ. He was the cherished grandfather of Daniel, Leah, Dina, Ethan, Cameron, Rita, Nora, Eve, Owen, Patrick, Brian and Kevin.
Tom was a proud alumnus of Boston College, served overseas in the US Air Force, and retired from a career as a purchasing manager for Honeywell-Bull. He was an avid golfer, returning to the South Shore to play with college friends on the first available Saturday morning tee time for decades, and was always proud of his athletic career in football and baseball at Archbishop Williams High School. He loved to take his family skiing, jogged a regular route around Nahant's East Point every morning in all weather, was active for 56 years at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and its St. Vincent de Paul Society, was elected to the Nahant Planning Board, and maintained a magnificent backyard tomato garden. Tom had a passion for travel that began during his time in the Air Force, where he was stationed in Évreux, France, giving him the opportunity to explore Europe and India. This wanderlust continued, taking Tom and his family on vacations to Ireland, Switzerland, and Italy, and culminating in a cross-continental road trip with Rita from Nahant to Alaska after his retirement.
Tom is survived by his wife, their four children and 12 grandchildren, and by his brother Charlie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John, and his sister Josephine McGuinness.
Service Information: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 248 Nahant Road, Nahant at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held prior to the service in the church from 9-11 a.m. Tom will be buried at Greenlawn Cemetery overlooking Nahant Bay.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made in Tom's name to the St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship or St. Vincent de Paul Fund, 248 Nahant Rd., Nahant, MA 01908 (stjohnstthomas.com). Online guestbook at www.Solimine.com.
