Thomas Richard Monnier

Thomas Richard Monnier (Richard), age 86, of Omaha, Nebraska, peacefully passed away on November 3, 2025, from natural causes. Richard was born June 9, 1939, on a farm near Toronto, South Dakota, to Alan Dale and Mildred (Brown) Monnier. Raised on the family farm, he learned the values of hard work and perseverance. He graduated from Clear Lake High School, Clear Lake, South Dakota, in 1957, where he was a standout on the basketball team, receiving All-State recognition. He briefly attended South Dakota State University. In 1959, Richard married his beloved wife, Bonnie Lavone Bunn, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Watertown, South Dakota. He served his country as a lieutenant in the National Guard after completing Officer Candidate School. After spending time in California working for General Motors, he returned to South Dakota, where he farmed with his older brother, Dale, near Brandt until 1987. After leaving the farm, he and Bonnie moved to Liberal, Kansas, where he obtained an accounting degree from Panhandle State University. He served as controller for Pride Feeders in Oklahoma and later as Chief Financial Officer for Farm Service Company in Iowa, retiring to Omaha in 2009. Throughout his life, he enjoyed agriculture, a good steak, traveling, all sports-particularly basketball and golf-and watching westerns. He was a proud father and was especially proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments, as well as his great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by and remembered lovingly as a man of faith and honored by his devoted wife, Bonnie; three children, Tom (Vickie) Monnier, Wichita, Kansas, Laurie (Brad) Poppen, Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Renee (Mike) Hurney, Edmond, Oklahoma. He was a cherished grandfather to ten grandchildren, Nate Monnier, Nolan Monnier, Missy (Dan) Jackson, Danny (Audra) Poppen, Matt (Amanda) Poppen, Ryan (Maddy) Poppen, Grant Poppen, Ashley Hurney, Amanda (Erik) Lee, and Will (Nina) Hurney. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, who will carry forth his memory in their hearts.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Celebration of Life Monday, November 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. A luncheon will follow in the Cutler-O'Neill Community Room. Memorials are suggested to Open Door Mission.
