Obituary for Thomas (Tom) J. Petrola

Thomas (Tom) J. Petrola, age 65, of Lewes, DE, and formerly a long-time resident of Brick, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on November 19, 2025.

Tom was born on October 21, 1960, in Jersey City, NJ, the son of the late Anthony Petrola and El Myra (D'Alusio) Petrola. The family moved to Hazlet, NJ when Tom was eight years old. He dedicated his life to the culinary arts, graduating with a degree in the field from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Tom's professional journey included an early career as a Chef in the French restaurant at Resorts Casino and Hotel. However, his true calling was teaching and mentorship. As a Culinary Instructor at Edison Job Corp, Tom was highly recognized for his commitment to underprivileged youth, helping them gain the skills needed to become successful chefs. His leadership led his students to win numerous culinary competitions, and he was repeatedly honored with employee of the month and year awards for his exceptional student completion and high job placement rates in the food service industry. He later continued his professional career as a Food Service Director at several long-term care facilities.

Beyond his impactful career, Tom was a man defined by warmth, hospitality, and a love for cats. In the summer, he could always be found on Asbury Park beach with friends, soaking up the sun and sharing laughter. At home, he was an avid vegetable gardener, dedicating special focus to his tomatoes. This yearly harvest culminated in his famous, delectable marinara sauce, which he diligently canned, preserving no less than 36 quarts each season. His signature Chicken and Eggplant parmesans were the two most highly requested dishes by his friends.

Tom's greatest joy was his cats, which he often rescued as strays, ensuring they lived the best life possible, including his current fur babies: Autumn (Fuzzy), Mystique (Missy), Ava, and Zoey.

Tom is survived by his devoted spouse of 33 years, Jon Day. He leaves behind his sister, Robyn (Petrola) Bryant of Cliffwood Beach, NJ. His memory is cherished by many dear friends, loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, as well as many cherished cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Petrola.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in New Jersey. The family will share details when arrangements are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of Thomas Petrola to Just Us Cats, an organization dedicated to providing rescue and care for stray and abandoned felines. Please send memorial contributions to: Just Us Cats and Kitten Rescue, Box 32, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
