Thomas Place Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 26, 2026.
We celebrate the life of Thomas Earl Place, a man of ambition, honesty, reliability, and intellectual prowess. Born on April 28, 1936, in Canton, NY, Thomas lived a life that touched and influenced many around him. He was a beacon of integrity in the banking industry, rising to prominence from humble beginnings as a teller at First National Bank in Potsdam to become the esteemed president of Norfolk Bank & Trust.

Thomas's ambitious spirit was evident in his successful career, but it was his generous heart that left an indelible mark on those fortunate to have known him. He was a good friend, mentor, and advisor, always ready to lend an ear or extend a helping hand. In retirement, Thomas found joy in the calming rhythm of fishing and the delicate art of flower gardening. These hobbies, coupled with his annual winter escapes to Del Ray Beach, Florida, and summers spent at his beloved camp in Lake Ozonia, painted a picture of a man who knew how to balance hard work with well-earned relaxation.

Thomas is survived by his son, Randal (Ellen) Place, his daughter, Cynthia (Keith) Berend, his grandchildren, Taylor and Molly Berend, Colin (Lauren) Place, his sisters, Sue Robinson and Pat Goolden, and his daughter-in-law, Alleen Daniele (Place). He was a devoted husband, cherishing his wife above all else. Preceding him in death were his parents, Donald and Harriette Place, his son Rick Place, and his sisters, Mary Agel and Nancy Wainwright.

It is with heartfelt remembrance that we honor Thomas's life. His legacy of ambition and generosity will continue to inspire all those who knew him. As Thomas preferred, services will be held privately in the summer at Evergreen Cemetery. Let us remember him fondly, not for his titles or successes, but for his unwavering kindness and his commitment to those he held dear. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos to Thomas's memorial page, a virtual space to honor his remarkable life.
