Thomas Salter Obituary

Tom Salter, 80, of Deerfield, passed away on March 25th, 2026 in his wife's arms, after a battle with lung cancer. Tom was born Nov. 7, 1945 in Quincy, MA, the son of Philip and Jessie (Dawe) Salter.
Tom graduated from Winchester H.S. and joined the Marine Corps in February 1964. As a member of the 12th Marines 3rd Marine Division, he was among one of the earliest Marines to serve in Vietnam in April 1965. He was the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action ribbon, Vietnam Service medal, the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross and Vietnamese Civic Action medal among other awards and citations for his extended service in the Vietnam War.
After the service, Tom attended Greenfield Community College and graduated from Amherst College. Tom worked in the field of Human Services for over 30 years; assisting homeless families obtain shelter and permanent housing. During this period, her served on many statewide Boards and panels helping to design shelter operations and services with State agencies. Tom enjoyed his gardens, being at the beach on Cape Cod and Florida with his wife, watching the grandchildren grow, learn and play sports, time with his son David, and family gatherings.
Tom is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 32 years, Cynthia Morey of Deerfield; his son, David T. Salter; his step sons, C.J. Plesnar (Cari), Mike Tessier (Melinda), and his stepdaughter, Tammy Lowell (Dave). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joe, Amanda, Hayley, Kylie, Hannah, Logan and Levi; and step grandchildren, Dominic and Derik.
Tom also leaves his sister, Ruth (Salter) Honke; his nieces and nephews; and sister in law and brother in law, Sue and Tom Laford.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
