Thomas Scholer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Merle Hay Funeral Home on Nov. 4, 2022.
Thomas Scholer, 71, passed away peacefully on November 2nd, 2022 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Services will be Friday, November 11th, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Chapel (7601 Fleur Drive) in Des Moines, Iowa from 5pm to 7pm. Burial will be at a later date.
Tom was born July 21, 1951 in Chariton, Iowa to Paul and Eileen Scholer as the third of seven children. Having such a large family you can only imagine the shenanigans that went on in that house. They had such a wonderful and loving childhood that to this day the stories are still being relived and the laughter still ensues. Tom spent most of his life working for Goodyear but he was most honored to have retired with 30 years of service in the military. Tom spent time in the Army and the Iowa Air National Guard. He saw a lot of the world with his time in the military and at times his family would join him when he was away. As proud as he was to talk about his military service, he was prouder of his girls. His loving and devoted wife, Vicki, and daughters Amy, and Kerry, were the reason he worked so hard to provide for them and give them a life and a childhood to cherish and adore. Of all the beauty in his life, he saw the majority of it in his granddaughters, for whom he saw his pride soar to new heights. Betsy and Carly were his ultimate joy in life and he loved nothing more than when they would visit, a phone call, or especially receiving something handmade from them.
Left to honor Tom are his wife of 49 years, Vicki, daughters Amy (Joe), Kerry (Kathy), his beloved grandchildren Betsy and Carly, brothers and sisters Mike, Barb, Joan, Mary, David, and Pat, and many other extended family members and friends to which he was very fond of and loved spending time with.
He was preceded in death by his grandson Quincy, brother-in-law Marc (Barb), and sister-in-law Vicki (Mike).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the family.
Some of his favorite expressions were, "Such a deal", "Isn't this a nice place", "How about them Hawks" and "Let's go Yankees"!

Vicki so sorry to hear about Tom. I apologize for not making it to the service. I just read it in the paper. My thoughts are with you and Kerry. Thinking of you often.

I agree with all the good things Tommy Hagen said about Tom. In Belize I actually carried the mortar from the mixer Tom ran to the block layers. Tom Scholer was one of the best workers and friend I knew in the Air Guard Civil Engineers. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Tom and I served together in the Iowa Air National Guard Civil Engineering Squadron. I especially recall our deployment to Belize. Tom operated the mortar mixer for laying the concrete block for the new motor pool building. We had three different crews laying block so it kept Tom very busy. But as always, he was always up for any task. I also remember a Rapid Runway Repair exercise in Florida. The exercise always tested ones nerves and stress levels. Tom would operate his heavy equipment as if it were a routine operation. He was always steady and sure with a bit of humor, which I enjoyed. I am very sorry to read of his passing. He was a good friend, a bother in arms and I was proud to serve with him. .I apologize for being unable to attend his service to visit with you about Tom. Rest in peace my friend. Tommy Hagen
