Thomas J. Smith

Thomas J. Smith, longtime resident of Tappan, New York, and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, and friend, passed away at the age of 88 from heart failure, surrounded by his family. He was married to the love of his life, Trudy Smith (née Bisso), for 63 years-a partnership marked by devotion, humor, and unwavering support.

Born and raised in Queens, Tom moved to Tappan in the early 1960s, where he and Trudy built a home filled with laughter, learning, and the joyful chaos of raising three boys: Scott, Craig, and Derek. Family was always at the center of Tom's world. He took great pride in his grandchildren-Tyler, Nicole, and Kelly, children of Scott and his wife Daphne; and Sabrina and Noah, children of Craig and his wife Lisa. Whether cheering them on, sharing stories, or slipping in a math puzzle or two, Tom cherished every moment spent with them.

Tom was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Tappan, where he served as the Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Men's Club. He was a lector for many years, as well as the scheduling coordinator for lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. His steady voice was a meaningful part of the parish community, and he took great pride in contributing to the life of the church.

He is survived by his brother Joe (Linda) and his sister Dolores (the late Gus). He was predeceased by his brother Vinny (Miriam), whom he remembered with deep affection.

A gifted educator with an insatiable curiosity, Tom dedicated more than 55 years to Manhattan College, where he taught mathematics, computer science, and courses on the Greeks and Romans. In addition, he was Department Chair for six years before spearheading the creation of a computer science program at the college. His passion for teaching was unmistakable-he had a rare ability to make complex ideas approachable, and he inspired generations of students who remember him not only for his intellect but for his kindness, wit, and genuine interest in their success. He was referred to as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Teachers).

Outside the classroom, Tom found joy in golf, reading, and tackling math puzzles with the same enthusiasm he brought to his lectures. His sharp, sarcastic sense of humor and his talent for storytelling made him the heart of every gathering. He had a way of turning even ordinary moments into memorable ones.

Tom's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched-through his family, his students, his parish community, and the many friends who were lucky enough to know him. He will be remembered for his wisdom, his humor, his generosity, and the love he shared so freely.

He will be deeply missed.
