Thomas Sorrell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home and Crematory on Mar. 10, 2026.
Thomas Albert Sorrell, 81, of Newkirk, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Kansas Heart Hospital.

Thomas was born on August 24, 1944, in Nowata, Oklahoma, to Edward and Maudie Sorrell. He attended Newkirk High School before leaving at the age of 17 to join the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, he earned his GED and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he attended Cowley College, where he earned his associate degree. He later built a long and respected career as a mechanic. Thomas was known for his strong work ethic, his ability to fix almost anything, and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. October 25, 1975, Thomas married the love of his life, Juanita. They made their home on the farm in Newkirk, where they raised their children and watched their grandchildren grow.

Thomas loved the simple joys of life. He enjoyed camping, fishing, farming, and most of all spending time with his family. He had a deep love for the outdoors and could often be found tending to his garden, planting flowers, or working the land he cared for so much. He loved his dogs dearly and spoiled them daily. Those who knew Thomas will remember his kindness, his steady presence, and the long stories he loved to tell about his time in the Navy. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love for the land, and dedication to family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Juanita; his children, LaDonna Eaglin (Michael) and Tommy Shelton (Amanda); his eight grandchildren, Tyler, Ali, Landon, Kayla, Brennen, Kyle, Devon, and Kaydence; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Jesse Sorrell, and many extended family members.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Maudie Sorrell; his brothers, Andy, James, and Dewey Sorrell; and his sister, Bertha Tull.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City, Ks by Pastor Ryan Whitley, with burial to follow at Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.rindt-erdman.com. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cowley County Humane Society in Thomas's name.

Thomas will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who loved him.
