Thomas Spruill Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rollins Life Celebration Center, P.A. on Dec. 12, 2025.
Thomas E. Spruill, born on October 31, 1944, in the Bronx, New York, to Alice Coleman of Saxe, Virginia, and Thomas Spruill Jr. of Edenton, North Carolina. He passed away on December 4, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by creativity, resilience, and a profound belief in the power of pursuing one's dreams.

Thomas was a man of remarkable determination and limitless imagination. Growing up with dyslexia, he transformed what could have been an obstacle into a source of strength and purpose. He became an author dedicated to uplifting others, writing stories that encouraged readers to believe in themselves as fiercely as he believed in the power of perseverance.

Among his works was Billy's Dilemma, a novel he wrote both to cope with his own journey and to inspire others facing similar challenges. He went on to write many sci-fi stories, each showcasing his expansive creativity and deep knowledge of the genre.

Gifted with many talents, Thomas found one of his greatest passions in dance. He trained for years at the Fred Astaire Studio in Staten Island, New York, becoming an extraordinary ballroom dancer. He mastered styles such as Bachata, Merengue, the Waltz, the Foxtrot, and many others. His grace, rhythm, and heartfelt expression made every performance memorable. He won trophies and medals for his performances.

Thomas's service to his community was equally significant. During his time working for the Staten Island Housing Authority, he dedicated himself to supporting those around him. He coached the local youth basketball league, leading his teams to win many trophies and medals. More importantly, he believed deeply in the young people he mentored, encouraging them to strive for greatness and work hard toward their dreams.

At age 70, Thomas once again proved that no dream is ever too late to pursue. He returned to college and earned his Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, proudly walking across the stage in triumph. While studying, he acted in and directed several Shakespearean plays and contributed his creativity to costume and makeup design. His love for history and storytelling led him to participate in major documentaries exploring local Civil War history, a subject he held close to his heart. Thomas was also an advid Bowler and was apart of a team and won a Bowling Ring as well.

Thomas was also a dedicated family man-one of the roles he cherished most. Married on February 10, 1986, Thomas and Pat shared over 40 years of marriage and countless moments of joy, strength, and partnership. She stood faithfully by his side through all of life's journeys, supporting his ambitions and celebrating his accomplishments. Pat was his best friend, dance partner, and loving caregiver. Together, they raised two children during their marriage, building a family rooted in love, perseverance, and unity.

He leaves to cherish his memory his: beloved wife, Pat H. Spruill; and brother, Keith Spruill. He was preceded in death by his sister, Peaches.
