Thomas Patrick Taney, 62, passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 1, 2025, in Phoenix, AZ. Thomas was known to most as Tom and went by Mr. Taney to his students, Papá to his children, Pa Tom to his grandchildren, and Gordito to his wife.
Tom was born on April 9, 1962, in Truckee, CA to John Taney and Sarah Taney (née Hixon). He was raised in Carson City, NV, where he enjoyed an ideal childhood; playing outside until dark, backpacking, road tripping in his family Volkswagen Camper, swimming at Lake Tahoe, hooky bobbin' during the winter, skateboarding in empty swimming pools, and having endless amounts of fun with friends. Tom spoke fondly of his childhood; his storytelling will be greatly missed and forever cherished. Tom graduated from Carson High School in 1980 before attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned his degree in 1984.
Following his graduation, Tom was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX, where his adventurous spirit was instantly captivated by Maria. Their love blossomed quickly after meeting on a blind date, and they married and began building a family together. Tom served nine distinguished years in the Army as a pilot, platoon leader, Air Cavalry Troop Commander, and Aviation Battalion Intelligence Officer (S-2). After settling in
Las Cruces, NM, Tom earned a master's degree from New Mexico State University in 1994 and taught math for 26 years across Las Cruces Public Schools, Gadsden Public Schools, and Bishop Ryan Catholic School.
Tom had a deep passion for education, but his favorite way to learn was through others. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He greeted everyone with a friendly wave and a warm 'good morning'. He bonded with others over his love of music, art, sports, and the outdoors. He enjoyed riding his bike to work every morning and cherished his evening and weekend rides on his tandem bike with Maria. Tom fully embraced the rich Mexican culture that Maria introduced him to, learning Spanish and developing a love for spicy food. Above all, what he radiated most was his unwavering positivity and faith. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him through every challenge with grace and humility.
Tom is predeceased by his beloved parents, John and Sarah, half-brother Dana, half-sister Antoinette, Uncle Robert, and niece Eve. Tom is survived by his wife Maria, children Maguire, Gabriel (Andrea), Sarah (Eric), and Bonnie, grandchildren Bradley and Ryan, brother Edward (Kelly), and half-sister Michaeline. Tom also leaves behind his brother-in-law John (Martha), and nieces Margie, Sandra, and Carolina.
