Thomas Homer Thompson III "Chip"
March 30, 1953 – October 16, 2025
Chip Thompson, age 72, passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, to Thomas Homer Thompson Jr. and Jo Hailey Thompson, Chip grew up in the heart of Buckhead.
A graduate of Northside High School, Chip made lifelong friends who remained by his side through every adventure. Chip later earned his reputation as the guy who could fix anything, grill everything, and make everyone laugh.
Chip leaves behind his wife and soulmate, Ann DeLay Thompson; his daughter, Chelsey (Brian) Berend, and granddaughters Lucy and Mary; his son, Jarod (Taylor) Thompson; his sister, Lynda Wingo Rigsby (nephews: Justin and Candler Wingo and families); and his brother, Mark Thompson. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Tommy and JoJo Thompson. To his family, he was "Chippa"-the name that perfectly summed up his humor, playful spirit, and knack for keeping life lighthearted.
A proud Georgia Bulldogs fan, Chip spent every football season yelling "Go Dawgs!" at the TV, surrounded by family, friends, and his dogs. Chip enjoyed going hunting, fishing, skiing with his family and infamous bocce trips with his friends, though he was just as happy with a cold drink, a good story, and a crowd to share it with.
Lake Burton was his happy place. Having spent childhood summers there, he was thrilled to pass down his love for the lake to his family at the beloved Lula Lodge-where laughter was loud, cocktails were cold, and no one ever left hungry.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Dr., Atlanta, GA. A Chippa Celebration of Life (the kind he would have wanted) will follow on Saturday, November 15, 2025, 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Dunwoody North Driving Club, 4522 Kingsgate Dr., Dunwoody, GA.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Chip's memory-or just raise a glass, share a laugh, and remember him with a smile.
