Thomas E. Toohig, 73, passed peacefully on May 23, 2018. Son of Thomasine (nee Eustace) and Maurice "Du" Toohig (both deceased). Father of Kelly Turle (Mike), Kevin, Brian and Sean Toohig. Grandfather of Michael, Kaela and Emily Turle, Tanner, Jesse and Kassidy Toohig, Jessica and Grady Toohig, and Molly, Allie and Katie Toohig. Survived by the mother of his children, Casey Toohig. Brother of Mary Toohig, Joanne Bokovitz (Ed), Loretta Quinn (Ken), and Terry and Paul Toohig (both deceased). Tom, a graduate of Cathedral Latin and John Carroll University, was most importantly a father, grandfather, and friend to many. He had a passion for basketball refereeing, which he excelled at for over 45 years at the high school and collegiate levels. He was so highly respected, he served as the local rules interpreter for over 22 years. Tom was known in the basketball community as a true professional who helped develop young officials, treated the game with the utmost respect, and brought a new level of professionalism to the world of officiating. He was an honored member of the Official's Hall of Fame. He was kind and humble, but boastfully proud of his children, grandchildren, and friends. Tom would cheer you through the hard times, and stand by your side in times of need. His wit drew people to him and his piercing candor made him unforgettable. Dad, we love you and will miss you greatly. Grab your whistle, and keep us in the game. Until we meet again, Slainte! Family and friends are invited to meet for a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Wednesday May 30 at Our Lady of Hope Church, (400 Center Road, Bedford, Ohio). In true Tom fashion, he would like to save you from the lines, and have you join his family for an Irish wake at the Winking Lizard (25380 Miles Road, Bedford, Ohio) following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund to remember the contributions and impact Tom Toohig made on the basketball officiating community and to continue to build on the passion he had. All funds will be used to create a memorial and a scholarship in his name. https://www.gofundme.com/tom-toohig-memorial-fund

My Sympathy to the Toohig family. I just learned of Tom's passing as I received the Cathedral Latin Newsletter. I was Tom's Classmate at Cathedral Latin.

My deepest sympathy to the Toohig Family. I have lost a great and loyal friend, but he will never be forgotten. Besides his family, basketball officiating was his next love. All basketball officials in Ohio, but especially Northeast Ohio can be grateful for the endless time and effort he put in to insure basketball officiating would move forward in a positive direction. His individual achievements are too many to mention, but thanks to Tom everything is flowing smoothly. I was very fortunate to work with Tom on the professional level and as an official. Two weeks ago I visited Cleveland and made it a priority to see Tom. Instead of officiating and his health, we talked about the family. Tom was very generous and had a great sense of humor, but more importantly he cared about people and was always willing to help. May your rest in peace my friend.

I remember Tom as our big brother! He was the oldest of all the many children in the neighborhood on Rosemont and at St. Philomena School. He led the way. We all eventually grew up and headed our separate ways. Eternal peace is for you now. My deepest sympathy to the Toohig family. Thanks for the memories!

Tom was one of the first Latin men I met when I started dating my husband, Mark Croce, in 1966. Mark often talked about him in the "typical comical" manner that he saved for his Latin friends. If Tom is remembered with a wink, a smile and a few LOL moments, it is a life well-lived! I remember Tom in that way. Gone too soon.

My Condolences to his family.

You fought long and hard to stay with your family and friends. But you finally took the hand of God and the Blessed Mother to go to your forever home!
I'm so grateful that you are not suffering any more.

Thanks for all the memories Tommy!

Tom was a very good basketball player in his own right. I went to school with him and graduated with him. He was a good guy and a Latin Lion. I am shocked to hear this. I lost my daughter on May 2nd. Tom, I hope she looks you up, her name is Leslie. God Bless Tom and all of his family.
