Thundathil Oommen Abraham

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thundathil Oommen Abraham, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and psychiatrist, who passed away on March 26th, 2026 in Rochester, New York.

Predeceased by parents T.K. Oommen and Accamma Oommen; brothers T.O. Koshy and T.O.Thomas; sisters-in-law Leelamma Koshy and Molly Thomas.

He was born in Cheriyanad, Chengannur. His father was a teacher and headmaster in a school, and his mother was a housewife. He was the youngest of three brothers.

He graduated from Medical College, Trivandrum. He belonged to the fifth batch. He was appointed as an assistant surgeon at a government hospital, Chandandppalli. Afterward, he joined Kozhikode Medical College as a tutor in psychiatry. He had his postgraduate education in psychiatry and neurology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore.

He became assistant professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry at Kozhikode Medical College.

He published scientific papers on schizophrenia and epilepsy in medical journals. He also contributed a series of articles to leading publications in Kerala. He also authored two books-one on suicide and another on mental illness-and both were well received.

He came to the US (Rochester) in 1971, and after additional training he worked as a psychiatrist and unit chief at Rochester Psychiatric Center. However, his longest psychiatric practice was at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Rochester, where he worked for 35 years. He was proud of the fact that he had the rare privilege to treat veterans from World War I through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He received several awards for outstanding service to veterans.

He was also a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical School for over 30 years.

He was board certified in general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry.

After he retired from the VA in 2012, he worked as a partner at Wayne County Behavioral Clinic for a few more years.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a voracious reader and also enjoyed playing chess and watching football, tennis, and soccer. He also enjoyed Valsa's garden.

He was a life member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Indian American Psychiatric Association. He was also a member of ICC and a benefactor at the inception of the center. He was a member of AKNG for several years. He was active in the Malayali community, especially in the early days. He was one of the earliest members of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church.

He is survived by his devoted wife Valsa; his daughters Sheena (Suresh) and Reena (Dean); adoring grandchildren Noah (Charlotte), Talya (Dani), Eli, Alysia, Amelia; and many other relatives and friends. He is also survived by his nephews Doctor Darlie Koshy, Jacob Koshy, Oommen Thomas, and Santosh Thomas, and their families, as well as many other relatives.

Thundathil Oommen Abraham's wisdom, kindness, and gentle nature touched everyone he met, and we are all better for having had him in our lives.

Calling Hours to be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. 3325 Winton Rd. South. Service to take place from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the All Season Chapel of White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road. Interment to follow.
