Timothy (Tim, Timmy) Joseph Flaherty, 77 of Medfield MA, passed away on September 12th 2024 in Framingham, Ma.
Son of Aurora M Flaherty (Palumbo) and Edwin C Flaherty, he was born on January 2nd, 1947 in Natick, MA. He graduated from Medfield High School in 1965 and went to Mass Bay Community College and later Emerson College where he graduated in 1973 with a major in Psychology. After college he joined the Peace Corps where he spent some time in Africa and then two years in Guatemala, where he met his former wife, Miriam Ramirez in 1976. Timothy and Miriam welcomed their daughter, Victoria (Vicky) in 1981.
During his time in Central America, he became fluent in Spanish and after returning to America, this helped him to secure a job with the Department of Corrections (DOC) as a bilingual Case Worker of nearly 30 years.
When his daughter was a child, Tim used to enjoy spending as much of his free time and weekends with her as he could. He fostered a shared love of reading, music, art, film, science, and imagination in her. They spent many weekends frequenting local museums, aquariums, parks, and libraries. Once Vicky turned 18 and went to college, Tim took on a weekend job as a concierge at a Back Bay Brownstone on Beacon St. in Boston, to stay busy. He worked there for over twenty years and the residents on Beacon St. came to love Tim and treated him like extended family.
Tim retired from the Department of Corrections after nearly 30 years and then decided to focus much of his free time on his 2nd career as a Free-Lance writer and artist. He wrote regularly for the Medfield Historical Society and other local publications where he often fondly reminisced about growing up in Medfield and never missed an opportunity to boast about being part of the Undefeated, Untied Football Team of MHS in 1964. Tim also had two books, the first was "Su Mano en Mi Mano" memoirs of a Peace Corps Volunteer, which he self-published. Before his passing Tim was working with an editor to formally publish his second book entitled "Her Side of the Sun", memoirs of a former Corrections Officer, Tim also loved pop and post-impressionist art and held multiple art exhibits in Medfield throughout the years at the local library as well as at Medfield TV.
Tim was predeceased by his parents Aurora and Edwin Flaherty Sr. as well as his brother Edwin (Todd) Flaherty Jr. Tim is survived by his daughter, Vicky Flaherty and her husband Chris D'amarino and their children, Tim's grandchildren, Brady E Flaherty and Aurora G Flaherty. Tim is also survived by his sisters Deirdre "Gogo" Merritt (Flaherty) and her husband Bradford Merritt of Scituate, and Edwina Porter (Flaherty) and her husband Scott Porter of Uxbridge as well as his brother Dennis Flaherty of Mashpee and several nieces and nephews: Ginger Merritt and Todd Merrit, Dana Porter, Kyle Porter and Alec Porter.
In honor of Tim's memory, donations would be welcome at the Medfield Animal Shelter, 101 Old Bridge Street, Medfield, MA 02052

I came across a notice of Tim´s passing in the Emerson College alumni magazine. I had not seen Tim since college but I do remember him as a sensitive and deep person. He and I were cast in a show together. We remained friendly and I would see him around school until graduation when we went our separate ways. I extend my condolences to his family.

The Flaherty family lived across the backyard from our house on Miller Street. I remember them all fondly and well. Aurora's sister was my mother's best friend. And, I, believe it or not, taught Tim how to play the piano.

Several years ago, Tim and I reconnected after I read one of his articles in The Portal. He sent me copies of his books, many essays and opinion pieces. i will miss hearing from him and send his daughter and family my deepest sympathy. May you find comfort and peace.
