Timothy Meade White, Mahpiya Akitcita, was born on August 3, 1953, in Sisseton, South Dakota to Cyrus White and Birdell (Starr) White Armell. He was the oldest of five children. He grew up in Sisseton and Frasier Montana. He graduated from Flandreau Indian School in 1972, after which he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from service in 1978.
Tim was united in marriage to Shirley Grandbois in 1973. They had one child, Autumn. After getting out of the service, they lived in Poplar Montana. Tim and Shirley eventually divorced. Tim also has a son Chris Brown.
Tim struggled with alcoholism for many years and has always been open about this. At the time of his death he had been sober for 33 years. Tim graduated from Sisseton Wahpeton College School of Nursing in 1995 receiving his RN degree in Nursing. He worked at Head Start and Dakotah Pride for many years professionally, but he donated his private time to those struggling with alcoholism as well. He ran Inipi at Dakotah Pride Center and at home and helped hundreds of people get sober and stay sober.
Tim loved being a grandfather. He was close to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the last years of his life, he took care of his great granddaughter Evaleena. Tim was traditional in spirituality and was a pipe carrier. He knew many ceremonial songs. He had a lifetime love of music and would often play his guitar and sing at various events and funeral services. Tim loved to tease and always had something to say. He liked to "visit" the casinos. He was a good friend to many and was always generous.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents Cyrus White and Birdell Armell and brother Dane White. He is survived by his siblings Jody White Rios, Joan White, Mary White-Country, John White, Russell Thompson Sr., Gayle Armell, Sharon Armell and Marcel Armell, his children Autumn Falcon and Chris Brown, grandchildren Rain Shepherd, Summer Falcon, Masey Kohl and great-children Evaleena Hill and Kataleya Kohl.
Memorial services are at the SWO Community Center on Sunday, August 31, 2025, followed by an all-night wake. Funeral service is on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the SWO Community Center, with the burial at the SWO Veterans Cemetery. Traditional services will be conducted by Chief Bear Cross, and the drum group will be Old Agency Singers. The Kit Fox Society will provide Veteran's Rites. The Pallbearers are as follows: Alex LaFromboise, Sam Crawford, Thomas Fayant, Prosper Thunderhawk, Ian Seaboy, Jeff Wanna, Elias Mendoza and John Gill. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Keeble, Richard Bird, Wesley Redday, Tom Wilson, Delight Heminger, Jessica Heminger, Guy Canku, Eric Siert, Cecil & Diane Renville, Lynn Halbert, Renetta Goeson, Bryan Akipa, June Adams, Glenn Wilson, Sylvester Yellowback, Dina Owen, Jennifer Oreskovich, Charlene German, Lolita Seaboy and Angel Marks.
