Tom Magliozzi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2014.
BOSTON (AP) — Tom Magliozzi, one half of the brother duo who hosted National Public Radio's "Car Talk" where they bantered with callers and commiserated over their car problems, has died of complications from Alzheimer's disease, the news organization said Monday. He was 77.

"Car Talk" was the network's most popular entertainment program for years, reaching more than four-million people a week on more than 600 radio stations across the country.

It continued to be a top-rated show even after the brothers stopped taping live shows in 2012, and the network began airing repurposed and archived materials.

Car Talk Executive Producer Doug Berman, in a statement posted on NPR's website, said Magliozzi's "dominant, positive personality" will be missed.

"He and his brother changed public broadcasting forever," he said. "Before Car Talk, NPR was formal, polite, cautious..even stiff."

The duo, which called themselves the "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers," dispensed humor and advice about repairing cars. They ended their shows with a catchphrase — "Don't drive like my brother" — delivered in their signature Boston accents.

In a statement posted on Car Talk's website, Ray Magliozzi affectionately teased his late brother: "Turns out he wasn't kidding...He really couldn't remember last week's puzzler."

The Magliozzis were an unlikely radio duo.

The Cambridge, Mass. mechanics and Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates began their show on WBUR, Boston's NPR affiliate, in 1977 as volunteers. The weekly program became nationally-broadcast starting in 1987 after building a steady local following.

Magliozzi was born June 28, 1937, in a largely Italian-American section of East Cambridge. According to NPR, he was the first in his family to attend college, earning a Chemical Engineering degree from MIT.

Magliozzi is survived by his first and second wives, three children, five grandchildren, and his close companion of recent years, Sylvia Soderberg, NPR said in a statement. In lieu of followers, the family has requested fans make a donation in his memory to either their local NPR station or the Alzheimer's Association.

Dear Ray, my condolences, respect and love go out to you and your family and friends. I was introduced to Tom and you by my father, in 1977, Pittsburgh, PA, on our kitchen radio, Saturday mornings, listening to Car Talk. You two made everybody family. Your car wisdom was truly remarkable, and the crazy humor was priceless. My father, a fellow, guy-under-the-hood, used your tips constantly to help diagnose our car problems. Your program became a shared tradition with me and my dad, even after I moved to California. To this day, I still enjoy listening on Sat./Sun. at 10am. It's my cherished piece of nostalgia. Thank you both for all the joy, fun, and car smarts you guys shared. To Click and Clack, may they play re-runs forever!

Emptiness, hard to believe Tom has passed. Our condolences to Tom's entire family. Ray, your tribute was incredibly beautiful and appropriate. My wife and I laughed until we cried at the end of the show. My Explorer that I am trying to sell lost its radio. It had the original CD of music that was playing for my dad when he passed away a few years ago. Right after your tribute show, the radio came on, and I was able to retrieve the CD. That may be Tom's first miracle on the way to canonization! God bless you, Tom. We will always miss you and your laughter.

Dear Ray:

I'm very sorry and sad at your, and many people's loss. I remember my mother listening to your show decades ago, and I picked up the joyful habit from her. I haven't owned a car for about 33 years now, and your show is still my favorite radio show! May God bring you healing and peace- He is real, He is present, and He is love (1 John 4:8). This is such a sad time...and will always always miss Tommy's laugh. God speed my friend and our prayers to the Magliozzi family.

Don't know that there has ever been a program as consistently informative, enjoyable and funny as Car Talk. After the first show I heard, I figured that episode was just an anomaly, that there was no way they could duplicate that effort again. As all of you know, thanks to the personalities and magical relationship of Tom and Ray; each and every show was as good as the previous one. Their joyful rapport should be admired and emulated by all siblings, regardless of how they drive. Hopefully Tom and Ray can reunite on the other side in the third half of their existence. Ray – Just don't be in too big a hurry, Tom will wait.

Although I have only been a radio listener, I feel as though a cherished family member has gone. I am very sad, and sad for family members knowing the void he leaves. November 5, 2014

RIP. You'll be missed. You sounded just like my father, who hailed from a podunk town not to far from Boston that held the UNH. He listened to your show religiously, agreeing with all your New England humor that often went way over my head, being raised in a much less fair city. Listening to you attempt to solve the sublime and the completely absurd problems made my weekend drive a joy. In my mind, Tom holds court surrounded by pearly gates, entertaining true believers and sinners too. I'm sure a snake can crawl up,those gates at the appropriate time to listen to next weeks broadcast on holy broadcast radio. You'll be missed by young and old and dog alike..that's quite an honor. I hope your family is coping, and that they're remembering all the love and sarcasm you spread to people who needed to hear it. You're in a better place....God Bless.

Tom and I went to high school together (Cambridge High and Latin School 1954). We had a lot of great times together including his funny imitation of the "Step Brothers." They were a famous song and dance team in the 1950's. He was brilliant and never had to study like the rest of us. In spite of his fame, he is still the same as he was back in high school. I have seen him many times at high school reunions where he always wanted to talk about our old teachers and friends. He is one of a kind and we will all miss him. "Once again you have squandered a perfectly good hour" was such an enlightening point and simultaneously a very sad moment when I heard those words. It meant the fun was over until next Saturday on NPR radios' "CAR TALK". Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers are my favorite and I wills always cherish the joy they brought me on those long drives from Tennessee to North Carolina. I hated it when my radio station would fade out when I crossed into North Carolina but not long I would locate another affiliate station and the fun return. And no resident will say: “I am sick…” Isa 33:24 this is comforting to know as we can expect this and actually look forward to a time of no more death. Our prayers go out to the family and friends.
