Tom Thomas

Tom "Tom Tom" Thomas, 70, of Soddy-Daisy passed away at home with his family on November 19, 2025.

Tom was born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 15, 1955. He spent his childhood traveling the world and living in different places while his father served in the Air Force. When his family moved to Soddy-Daisy after Tom graduated from high school, he found his true home, where he met his wife of 50 years, Mary Mahaffey Thomas.

Tom worked as an ironworker as a member of Local 704 and also as a truck driver for many years. He was a member of the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department for 52 years and loved being a firefighter, especially driving and caring for their vintage fire truck, Beulah. He also loved cars, airplanes, and talking about his dad's accomplishments as a pilot in the Air Force. However, Tom's greatest joy in life was his family, including his kids and grandkids.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Col. Eugene C. Thomas and Mrs. Betty Reese Thomas, and his brother, Bobby Thomas, for whom Tom and Mary were caregivers for nearly 25 years. He is survived by wife, Mary; his children, Mary Haymaker (Philip), Amanda Kirby (Joshua), and Tom Thomas (Gwyne Morrison); his grandchildren Gauge, Elias, and Crimson Kirby; his sisters, Jeanie Westerman (Kevin) and Susan Young, and several nieces and nephews, including his niece Angela Murray, who his family would like to thank for helping to provide care for him over the last months of his life.

Tom's family would like to thank the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department for all of their help over the last several months and for being Tom's "second family" for more than 50 years, as well as the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in Red Bank and Dr. Charles Joels for taking care of Tom for many years.

In lieu of flowers, Tom's family asks that donations be made to the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department, Orange Grove Center, or the Chattanooga Kidney Foundation.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Allen Branum officiating. There will be a funeral procession leaving Williamson and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Those planning to follow the funeral procession should be at the funeral home by 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
