The family of Thomas "Tommy" Q. Cash sadly shares that he passed away peacefully at home in St. Augustine, FL, on August 27. Tommy grew up in Dover, NH, and graduated with the DHS Class of 1960. That same year, he was quarterback in the VT/NH Shrine Football Game. A three-sport athlete, he was well known around town and highly admired by local sports enthusiasts. Sports never left his blood-he went on to coach softball and Little League in Somersworth, NH, ran road races all over New England (he had quite the t-shirt collection to prove it), and even ran more than ten marathons, from Boston and New York to Montreal and Dublin, back when running wasn't popular. He rooted for the Yankees, Bears, and UNH Wildcats, but his heart really belonged to the Boston Bruins. Tommy worked at GE in Somersworth for 36 years before hanging up his hat in 1996. He lived in Somersworth and North Conway, NH, before settling down in St. Augustine. Wherever he lived, he found a church family and served however he could-on vestries, as an acolyte, or as a warden. He was also the kind of guy who gave his time freely to local organizations and never hesitated to pitch in when someone needed help. Tommy enjoyed summers in his beloved York, ME, where he spent time at his grandparents' home as a child. In later years, he was happy to get away from the Florida heat and be with his family on the Nubble. He would visit old high school friends in NH and extended family, too. To his family, he was "Gumpy," a name he made up for grandfather, and many relatives and friends ended up calling him that. He had a unique sense of fashion-he loved Crocs, Hey Dudes, and Chuck Taylors, especially in bright colors, wore crazy socks to solemn occasions, and had a baseball cap collection that could rival a sporting goods store. He loved a good pint of Guinness with a box of Cheez-Its, never forgot a face or a story, and had a knack for making folks laugh. Tommy will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, sense of humor, and the deep love he had for his family. He was a loyal son and brother and a fiercely protective and supportive husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He loved to dance, and he shined at Griffin and Erin's wedding last year, dancing with any lucky lady near him on the dance floor. Tommy is survived by his wife and soulmate of 61 years, Kate Caswell Cash; his daughter, Kendall Kay (Chris); his grandson, Griffin Kay (Erin); his brother, Kevin Cash (Sheila); his sister-in-law, Carolie Cash; and many nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas "Tom" Q. Cash II; his parents, Hope Marshall and John Francis "Tanny" Cash; and his brother, Barry "Bud" Cash. A service will take place at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, 37 Lovett St., St. Augustine, FL 32084. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the church would be appreciated. A future service and burial will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, NH, at the convenience of the family.
