VERONA – Tommy Teddy Reed, 89, of Verona, passed away Friday, December 20, 2024 in Shenandoah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Tom was born in Alleghany County on March 21, 1935, a son of the late Teddy Orange Reed and Gertha E. (Graham) Reed. He graduated from Mt. Sidney High School in 1953 and served in the U. S. Army at the close of the Korean War and continued his service in the Army Reserves for a number of years.
Tom attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church with his family as he grew up. He developed a strong work ethic as a boy, working alongside his father in various farming roles. He was employed within several industries throughout his lifetime, and in each of them demonstrated remarkable mechanical skills and ingenuity that allowed him to excel in his work. He retired from Rexnord Corporation in 1998. Tom was a true automobile enthusiast, always delighted to take on a project of auto repair or restoration.
On March 31, 1956 he married the former Peggy Hamilton, who survives along with their son, Geoffrey "Jeff" Reed (wife Jalane); four brothers, William Reed (wife Marilyn) of Staunton, Melvin Reed (wife Rebecca) of Verona, David Reed (wife Ginny) of Verona, and Bobby Joe Reed (wife Lillian) of Fishersville; sister Annabelle Craun of Verona; grandson Joseph Thomas Reed of Verona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert "Bobby" Craun.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held 11 a.m., January 11 in the chapel of Bear Funeral Home, officiated by Chaplain (LTC) Brett Johnson, Virginia Army National Guard. Burial with military honors will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service, beginning at 9:30.
Memorials may be directed to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, or to the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
