Tootie Mackey

Pearce Webb "Tootie" Mackey passed away on Friday, November 21 at Rice Estate in Columbia, SC. She "shuffled off this mortal coil" at peace in her sleep. Would that we all could be so fortunate.

Born with a servant's heart, Tootie's love for others was only surpassed by her love for her family, close friends and the Lord. Her family always knew when someone in the church had a baby or was ill because the meal she prepared to deliver was a double recipe that they too enjoyed that evening at home….and it was often.

Tootie was born in Columbia on October 13, 1939, the daughter of Thelma Pearce and Henry Elliott Webb. Born on her mother's 28th birthday, the two shared a special bond and 59 birthdays together.

Tootie was a 1957 graduate of Camden High School with honors. She then enrolled at Winthrop College (University), later transferring to the University of South Carolina in 1959, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the USC College of Education in 1961.

Tootie began a lengthy and fruitful teaching career at Hand Junior High School in Columbia with teaching stops at public schools in Chester and Greer, SC and Salisbury, NC. She loved teaching history and social studies and mentoring students in the SEAGUL Program in Kershaw County. Mrs. Mackey adored children and pouring into them.

Transitioning to Christian Education, she was the director of Christian education at both The Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood, SC and later at her beloved Grace Episcopal Church in Camden. It is believed that Tootie served on and/or chaired every committee, assembly, panel, board or commission at Grace Church during her many decades as a member. She also was a long-time supporter and board member of York Place Children's Home in York, SC.

A life-long learner and avid reader, she was well known and well looked after by the staff at the Kershaw County Library. Humble and quiet, Tootie rarely mentioned it but, if asked, she'd tell you about riding the train to New York City and competing on the gameshow Jeopardy in Spring of 1969.

Tootie was predeceased by her sweetheart, husband and best friend of 64 years, Daniel Barber "Danny" Mackey II, and her brother, Henry Elliott Webb, Jr. She was beloved by her sons, Benjamin Elliott Mackey and Daniel Barber Mackey III (deceased), and grandsons Walker B. Todd, B. Elliott Mackey II, Thomas M. Mackey and Coleman L. Mackey. Forever young at heart, she was her grandsons' favorite cook, coloring book companion and confidant. She is also survived by a sister, Anne Lucas Hughes and two sisters-in-law, Kennon A. Webb and Virginia M. Green.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, at Grace Church Episcopal, 1315 Lyttleton Street in Camden. A reception will follow at the church's Richardson Hall.

At her request, Tootie's ashes will be scattered at a future date. Her place in our hearts, however, will last forever.
