Tracy Petty Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweet's Funeral Home on Mar. 16, 2026.
Tracy E. Petty, affectionately known by many as "The King," passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, at the age of 68. Born in Hyde Park on October 24, 1957, Tracy's zest for life and infectious laughter left a mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Tracy was predeceased by his father, Edward RS Petty, who instilled in him the values of hard work and dedication. He is survived by his loving brother, Ed Petty of Hyde Park, his caring sister, Kathy Petty of Poughkeepsie, his cherished niece, Stacey Potik, and his adored great-nephew, Gavin. Tracy also leaves behind a host of friends who became like family over the years.

For many years, Tracy was a dedicated employee at the City of Poughkeepsie Department of Public Works. His commitment to his work was evident in the meticulous way he approached every task. Colleagues knew him as a man who could always be relied upon, and his sense of humor often turned long workdays into memorable ones.

Tracy's interests were as vibrant and varied as his personality. An avid beer connoisseur, he enjoyed unwinding with friends and sharing stories over a cold one. His passion for NASCAR was unmatched, and he could often be found cheering on his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, from the edge of his seat. Tracy's love for golf was another pastime that he pursued with enthusiasm, appreciating not only the sport but also the camaraderie that came with it.

In his early years, Tracy was known in motocross racing circles for his fearlessness and skill. Those who knew him then still speak of his races with a mix of awe and nostalgia. His adventurous spirit was a testament to his belief in living life to the fullest.

Above all, Tracy was known for being funny, friendly, and handy. His quick wit could lighten any mood, and his readiness to lend a hand made him a friend to many. His ability to fix almost anything was a source of pride and a boon to those he helped.

Tracy E. Petty's legacy is one of laughter, friendship, and an unwavering zest for life. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. As we bid farewell to "The King," we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire joy and kindness in the hearts of those he touched. Tracy's journey through life was a testament to the power of living authentically and embracing every moment with open arms.
