Travis Baxter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sigler Funeral Home Inc. - Lucedale on Dec. 29, 2025.
Travis B. Baxter, age 93, of Agricola, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, at 12:46 a.m., of sound mind and surrounded by the people he loved and the land he called home for most of his life. He was born on February 2, 1932, in Washington County, Alabama, the eldest of eight children born to Hubert and Mabel Baxter. In 1940, Travis moved with his family to George County, Mississippi, where they farmed and laid deep roots that would define his values, work ethic, and love for his community. Travis served his country with honor as an Army sergeant in Germany during the 1950s. After returning home, he married Margaret Emerson in 1954, and together they raised three children on the same land where he would later spend his final days. In 1980, he married Lois Scott, with whom he shared many years of companionship. For more than 40 years, Travis was employed at Ingalls Shipbuilding, where he worked as a supervisor and earned a reputation for diligence, integrity, and quiet leadership. In addition to his professional career, he faithfully served on the Board of Directors for Singing River Electric Cooperative for 48 years, a testament to the trust and respect he earned within his community. Travis had many interests and skills, including farming, beekeeping, carpentry, hunting, and gardening. He was known for his generous spirit, often sharing the vegetables he grew with anyone he encountered-neighbors, friends, and even the mailman. He was a loyal friend, a man of his word, and someone others could always depend on. If he said he would do something, he did it. He never complained, never spoke ill of others, and faithfully minded his own work and business. Travis was a devoted member of Agricola Baptist Church and lived out his faith through service, humility, and love for others. He enjoyed studying genealogy and history, taking great interest in the stories of those who came before him. Above all, he loved his family deeply and found his greatest joy in them.

He is survived by his three children: Martha Evelyn Ely; Travis Michael Baxter (Lisa); and Susanne Marie Howell (Tony); ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and five siblings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Mabel Baxter; Margaret Baxter; Lois Baxter; and his sisters, Christine and Vermel. On December 28, 2025, Travis finished his last job-and, as he did all things in life, he completed it well.

The funeral will be held 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Agricola Baptist Church, 7268 Barton-Agricola Road, Lucedale, MS 39452. Burial will be in Agricola Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Saturday, January 3, 2026 from 11:00am-12:00pm at Agricola Baptist Church, 7268 Barton-Agricola Road, Lucedale, MS 39452.

Pallbearers will include: Chris Estis, Tyler Baxter, Trey Howell, Jarrod Howell, Justin Baxter, Parker Baxter, and Blake Baxter.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Agricola Baptist Church Building Fund.

Yesterday

Michael, Evelyn, Suzanne and families: we are so sorry about losing your dad and grandfather. Although we are never ready to say goodbye we know that Travis is in a much better place tonight than he was a week ago. We all have our memories of him and one from a long time ago was when your mom passed and he looked me up one Sunday after church to tell me how good that steak and gravy was that I made. later I made him another pot of steak and gravy. I guess my most recent was kidding him about trying to park that big truck and he needed to get a small car to park in that church parking lot. And we always had to discuss our age he always had to brag about. He was 10 years older than me although he did not get around like that. we will miss him greatly, and our hearts are with you as you go through this time of sorrow . May God bless -
