Trevor Splane Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Integrity Funeral Home & Cremations - Jacksonville on Jul. 15, 2025.
Trevor Douglas "Doug" Splane passed lightly from this world on July 15, 2025 at The T. O'Neil Douglas Center for Caring in Jacksonville, FL. Doug was born in Memphis, Tennessee on November 21, 1946 to Vincent DePaul Splane and Treva Wayne Splane. Doug graduated from Stranahan HIgh School in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 1964. He graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL in 1969. While at UF, he played football as a tight end for the Florida Gators from 1965-1967, and met Nancy Gray Register, whom he married in 1970. After college, Doug joined the US Army and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, where he and Nancy welcomed their first child, Jessica (1972). The couple subsequently moved back to Gainesville, where Doug enrolled in the University of Florida College of Dentistry, earning his doctorate in 1977.

Doug started his first dental practice on the corner of Riverside Avenue and King Street in Jacksonville, FL and the family expanded with 3 more children, Holland (1978 - deceased), Trevor (1980), and Hadley (1982). Doug practiced in Riverside until he moved the office to Avondale in the 1980's He created a practice that felt like a family. You would often find him visiting with his patients in the waiting room, juggling with them in the dental chair, or squirting them with "Mr. Thirsty", the dental water sprayer. He dedicated himself to excellence as a dentist and to upholding his community. He was a board member for Riverside Presbyterian Day School, a chairman for Riverside Avondale Preservation, an elder at Riverside Presbyterian Church, and was active in the Rotary Club of Jacksonville.

Doug ran the River Run more times than you can count, once even with a broken toe after killing a bug with his bare foot the night before the race! He loved to fish offshore and picked up many an outdoor past-time through the years (camping, road biking, riding his motorcycle). He excelled in jumping/ flipping off high cliffs into bodies of water, even into his seventies.

After retiring in 2018, Doug was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy and began a long journey through the complexities of dementia. Through it all, Doug consistently wanted to get out, to visit with people, and to "putter around". He was always grateful for a stroll down the hall, or a wheelchair around the neighborhood. The sentiments that he expressed most often near the end of his life were "I love you" and "Thank you".

Doug is survived by his wife Nancy Register Splane, his children Jessica (Greg) Veltkamp, Trevor Splane, Hadley (Charles) Splane-Borja, and his grandchildren, Harriet, Griffin, and Erna.

A memorial service for Dougie will be held Aug 9, 2025 at 11:00 am at Riverside Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the T. O'Neil Douglas Center for Caring, or to the charity of your choosing in his honor.

I just learned of Dr. Splane´s passing. He was my dentist since the 1980´s... going above and beyond by helping me get insurance approval for law surgery after several denials (despite my pain). He was very kind and supportive when my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer... even offering to provide care without charge. Fortunately we had the means to cover the expense but he timed the payment so we could deduct the costs on our taxes.
Just want his loved ones to know of the exceptional kindness he showed his patients.
Blessings for his family and close friends...
