Jewel CARTER Obituary

CARTER, Jewel Esther Smith Jewel "Julie" Esther Smith Carter, died on Friday, (February 26, 2010) at Crestfield Rehabilitation Center, where she had received warm, loving, and hopeful care for the last several months. Born in Hartford, CT on September 24, 1923, Julie graduated from Simsbury High School, earned degrees from the University of Connecticut, New Britain Teacher's College (now CCSU), and the University of Hartford. She was an educator, guidance counselor, and administrator in several school systems throughout the state. A resident of Marlborough since 1980 Julie was active in the Marlborough Congregational Church where she served as the Christian Education Chair and was a member of the Dorcas Society. She was of Gilead Community Services and served in local arts and garden associations. She kept an extensive organic garden and never met a reusable dog or cat she didn't like. She lived to see her beloved Red Sox win two World Series and was an ardent Lady Huskies fan to the end. In addition to her friends and members of the Marlborough Congregational Church Julie leaves behind a daughter, Linda Carter Calabrese and her husband Tom of Tolland; a son, George C. Carter and his wife Denise of Middlefield; two brothers, Stephen and Edward Smith; and five grandchildren, Michael, Mark and Audra Makuch, Matthew Caniglia, and Andrew Carter; as well as three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Carter, and Charlotte. She was predeceased by a brother, Sterling Viets of Windsor, CT. A memorial service will be held in the Marlborough Congregational Church, 35 So Main St., Marlborough, CT at 11 AM on Saturday, March 6, 2010 with a reception to follow. There are no calling hours.

My condolences to Julies family. I will always remember Julie as a kind, loving friend. We spent many happy times reminiscing about family at our prayer circles and over our Thursday lunches. She will be greatly missed. Irma Ervick.
