Winterville – Tucker Poarch, 74, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 27th from 6 to 8 pm at Smith Funeral Service.
Tucker, a native of Suffolk, Virginia, was a graduate of Forest Glen High School. At the age of 14, Tucker guided scientists from the Smithsonian into the Dismal Swamp and assisted them in collecting rare insect species that remain in their collection to this day. After graduating high school, Tucker served in the United States Navy as a corpsman from 1974-1987. Tucker sailed on USNS Josephus Daniels and USNS Persistent. Following his military service, he went back to school and earned his BSN. While in Virginia, he worked at Powhatan prison infirmary and Lynchburg Medical College. In 1992, he made his home in Greenville where he worked at Maury Correctional institution, Beaufort hospital and the Howell Center for a number of years.
Tucker loved Rock & Roll, scuba diving in Hawaii, cooking, camping, fishing, canoeing, and just being outdoors. Tucker also loved to read, he enjoyed Plato, Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King novels. A talented carpenter, Tucker enjoyed creating things and spending time with his daughter Bethany.
He was preceded in death by his parents, N. T. and Margaret Poarch; and niece, Judith Peters.
He is survived by his daughter, Bethany Dale Poarch and husband, David Sigmon; sister, Judy Peters; and a brother, William Poarch.
