Celebrating the Life of V. Lorene Scott
Today, we gather to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of V. Lorene Scott, lovingly known as "Lorene" or "Lo" who was Choctaw and Chickasaw. She was gifted the spiritual name "Gentleness Woman" in traditional ceremony many years ago. Her greatest honor was becoming "Grandma." Her fondest memories are living on the Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate reservation in Marty, South Dakota making relatives. On October 3, 2025, at the age of 81, Grandma Lorene passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who cherished her most. Born on May 17, 1944, in Coal County, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Irvin Cole and Grace Carpenter (Leflore).
Lorene devoted 25 years of her life to the nursing profession, serving with unwavering passion and grace. Her commitment to caring for others touched countless lives, and she was deeply admired for her quiet strength, generous spirit, and steadfast love for her family. Beyond her career, Lorene found joy in sewing and spending meaningful time with her loved ones. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always putting her family at the center of her life. Lorene's warmth, devotion to her culture and Creator, and her caring nature made her a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her.
In addition to her dedication to nursing and family, Lorene was a respected pipe carrier and Sundancer at the Greenwood Sundance grounds with the Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate for many years. She played a vital role as a women's spiritual leader, guiding and uplifting others in her women's circle through wisdom and compassion. Lorene's spiritual beliefs profoundly shaped her approach to caring for her community and family. She was known for her generosity-feeding and raising countless children, cooking for Sundance singers, and supporting community gatherings with unwavering kindness.
As a boarding school survivor, Lorene endured the loss of her language and the sacred way of life but found healing and resilience through her cultural and spiritual traditions during her time in South Dakota. In her final moments, she enjoyed singing Sundance songs in the company of her loved ones. Lorene will be remembered as a strong, vocal, and fierce woman, whose gentle love shone especially for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the entire community. Her devotion to serving others will remain an enduring inspiration to all who knew her.
