VADA POWERS Obituary

POWERS, Vada Gear, 91, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Sloan Powers; grandson, Jacin Powers; brothers, Herbert, James and Arthur; and sister, Laura May. She is survived by her brother, Paul Gear; sister, Rosalie Poole; sons, Philip S. Powers Jr., Timothy W. Powers and Scott E. Powers; grandchildren, Tamra, Bryan Scott, Kevin and Dominic; great-grandchildren, Sara, Jonathon, Tyler, Haley, Elizabeth and Alexandra; and 19 nieces and nephews. A graduate of the University of Maryland, she was a wonderful, devoted wife and mother, and was a beautiful treasure that will be missed by all. Her love of her husband, children, life, music, singing, dancing, science, nature, literature, painting and poetry were an inspiration to all. The family will receive friends with viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. May 6, 2010, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond, Va., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Arrangements by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Richmond Firefighters Association, 2302 West Main St., Richmond, Va.

Vada's smile welcomed all to her family and she welcomed us in just that way. We know she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Vada once spent several days pondering what was the most beautiful thing in the world, not counting intangibles such as freedom or love. She shared her conclusion with us: the most beautiful thing of all was light.
