Valentine J. Grunewalder, 92, passed away on Tuesday morning November 9 in Greensboro, N.C. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Manasota Funeral Home, 1221 53rd Ave. East, Bradenton, Fl. 34203. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Novem-ber 19, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 20, 2010 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 7461 Prospect Rd., Sarasota, Fl. 34243. Val was born and raised in New Jersey, spending most of his early years in Hillside. He graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Pharmacy, but with the outbreak of World War II, went to work for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. (currently PPG Indus-tries) in Newark, N. J. in their paint division as a chemist. He stayed with PPG throughout his working career in various technical positions in Newark and later moved to Pittsburgh, PA to work as a Market Manager. He retired after 39 years and moved back to New Jersey in the late 1970's to a house he and his wife, Anne, built down the shore. He and Anne started spending winters in Bradenton and finally decided to re-locate to Bradenton where they bought a house in the Peridia Golf Course community. Anne passed away in 2001 and Val continued to live in Bradenton until 2009 when he moved to Greensboro to be closer to his son and daughter-in –law. He enjoyed golf, cruising, working in the yard and spending time with his many friends. He is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Beth, grandchildren Kristin and Andrew and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church Building fund in Val's name.
