She was born on November 11, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Leslie and Winnifred Brereton Williams. She graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1956. Following graduation she moved to New York to join her mother and step-father and became a guide at the United Nations. Valerie served on numerous boards and became involved in Republican politics. She joined the Junior League of Hartford, eventually becoming President and then Regional Director and ultimately first Vice President of the Association of Junior Leagues. One of her most interesting volunteer jobs was that of Consumer Representative on the FDA panel for the classification of neurological devices, an assignment which required attending a number of meetings in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere. Golf was an important part of Valerie's life. As a member of The Hartford Golf Club she was elected to the Board of Directors, and then in 1996, on its 100th year anniversary, became its first ever woman's President. A beautiful stone bridge on the third hole was dedicated in her honor to mark the occasion. She also served on the Board at the Black Hall club in Old Lyme. When she and her husband lived in Florida, Valerie served a term as President of the Ibis Women's Golf Association. In 2022, the Fenwick Women's Golf Championship was renamed in her honor. On the State level the competitors in the annual Connecticut Women's Open Championship play for the Valerie W. Bulkeley trophy. For her outstanding efforts on their behalf, she was elected an honorary member of the class in 1984 on the occasion of their 35th Reunion. She and her husband also served as Co-Chairs of Grandparent's Day when two of their grandsons were enrolled. Valerie was the membership chair of 350+ 18-hole women golfers at the Ibis Golf and Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when my husband and I moved there. She took the time to come to our house and, finding we were both golfers, invited us to her and Peter´s house for dinner and to introduce us to another couple who were friends of theirs, thinking we would be a good match. She was so very right! We all became good friends and enjoyed many years
together.
I always looked forward to Valerie´s Christmas letters, full of love and pride for her family.
We missed she and Peter when they moved back to Connecticut but kept in touch.
It is great sadness to know that Valerie has taken the last journey, but am sure she is organizing the angels in heaven and ready to make sure all newcomers to heaven will feel right at home.
My husband, Dave, left earth 4 years ago and was there to welcome her.
Love,
Kay Welch

Dear Mrs. Bulkeley, I'm sorry to hear of your passing, and my condolences to your husband, Peter- whom I knew back in his, and my, AEtna Life and Casualty days in the Personal Financial Security Division. Mr. Bulkeley had an office located in our department. I was in the AEtna Life Insurance and Annuity Company. One event was a pot luck department lunch. Peter brought in this delicious taco dip as his contribution. It was so good, several asked for the recipe. I was very touched by your kindness, when a few days later, Peter brought in your recipe for Best Ever Dip. I know this seems inconsequential at this time, but for over 35 years, your recipe has been in my recipe box. I think of those days at AEtna, when we (and the City of Hartford) were all much younger. God Speed!
