Valerie Smevold Russell

Valerie Smevold Russell (nee Below), age 79, of Lake Barrington passed away peacefully on the evening of November 7th, 2025. She was beloved wife to the late Richard Smevold and is survived by their children, Eric and Kristin Smevold, and cherished granddaughters, Keira and Ava. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Elaine Below.

Valerie was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 9, 1946. She was a graduate of Principia High School and a journalism major at Michigan State. Her favorite memories were summers at Camp K0hahna and later working at the Inn at the Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor, Michigan. She helped run the Hobson House restaurant in Long Grove, IL, with her husband Richard Smevold from 1969-1993 followed by a career in real estate with Stark Realtors in Barrington, IL.

A memorial service is being held at 11 Am December 6th at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 421 E Main St in Barrington, IL. Immediately following the service with be a Celebration of Life Luncheon at Morretti's Barrington next door to the church. 

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes charitable donations made in Valerie's honor to her beloved church where she was a longtime member since 1973; First Church of Christ, Scientist, 421 East Main Street, Barrinton, Illinois.

Valerie will be forever missed.
