Vancella Ann Leavell, aged 73, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025. She was a beloved wife, mother, granny, sister, aunt, and friend, whose warm spirit and nurturing heart touched the lives of many. She had an unwavering faith in God, a faithful member of King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church. Vancella had a passion for cooking and cherished family gatherings, and her dedication to hard work was unparalleled. Known for her caring nature and open-door policy, she welcomed all into her home with love. Her presence will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on August 5, 1952, in Valley, Alabama, Vancella was the daughter of O.D. and Georgia (Marshall) Byrd. She is preceded in death by her father, O.D. Byrd; her mother, Georgia Mae Brown; her husband, James Edward Leavell, Sr.; and her brother, Lorenzo Byrd.
Vancella is lovingly survived by her children, James Edward (Shaun Ross) Leavell, Jr., Shawndell M. (Shahee Hill) Leavell, and Joy R. Leavell. She will also be forever remembered by her grandchildren, Jalen Hill, Jaron Hill, Wanye Shoulders, Jamesha Leavell, Jashawn Leavell, and Darius Leavell, along with her great-granddaughter, Naomi Leavell. Additionally, she is survived by her brothers, O.D. Byrd, Algie Byrd, and Joe Saleem, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends who will cherish her loving memory.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Hwy). Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life Service will take place at 2:00 PM at the same location.
