Velma Jean (Fisher) Bennett, 92, of Benkelman, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 8, in McCook, Nebraska.
Born in
Wilson, Kansas, to George and Edith Fisher, Velma's life was a tapestry woven with creativity, dedication, and love. She spent most of her years in the greater Wichita area, later moving to Benkelman in 2023 to be closer to family. Velma's hands were rarely still. She found joy in quilt-making, sewing, and baking - her beautifully decorated cakes and treats brightened countless celebrations and brought smiles to all who tasted them. Her talents were not only a source of happiness but also provided extra income for her family.
Outside the home, Velma was known for her strong work ethic and commitment. She contributed her skills to Swiss-Burger Brand Meat Company, Kanal, and devoted more than two decades to Tweco. Colleagues and friends remember her as a hardworking, caring, and dependable presence.
Velma was a devoted wife to her beloved husband of 55 years, Milton Ray Bennett, and a loving mother and grandmother. She cherished her family above all, creating a home filled with warmth, love, and the aroma of many delicious meals.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Edith Fisher; her husband, Milton Ray Bennett; her four brothers, George, Charlie, Robert, and William; and her three sisters, Edith Bilyeu, Phyllis Wade, and Marjorie Patterson.
Velma's legacy lives on through her daughters, Verla Martin (Terry) of Benkelman, Nebraska, and RaeEtta Emmett (Bert) of Sunland, California; her granddaughter, Ashley McClure (Alex Murrain) of Sacramento, California; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Her family invites friends and loved ones to remember Velma by sharing stories, laughter, and the simple joys she treasured. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her memory by baking something sweet for someone you love or by supporting a charity close to your heart.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Walnut Valley Memorial Park, El Dorado Kansas.
