Vera Popwell "Polly" Abbott passed away January 1, 2026 at the age of 99. She was born September 25, 1926 to the late Henry Popwell, Sr. and Rosa Baker Powell.

Although she had to leave school after the 3rd grade to help on her family farm, Polly never allowed that to hinder her education or thirst for knowledge. She was a lifelong learner, always with a book in hand, immersing herself in new subjects and expanding her horizons. Her relentless quest for knowledge was a testament to her resilience and her passionate spirit.

Polly owned her own monogramming business for many years in Selma, where she brought a personal touch to every item she crafted. Her outgoing personality meant that she never met a stranger; she welcomed everyone with open arms and an inviting smile. Polly's generosity extended beyond her business, as she was always looking for ways to help others in her community, embodying the spirit of service that she cherished deeply.

Her love for her family was immense and unwavering. Polly cherished each family gathering, reveling in the joy of shared stories and laughter. She enjoyed serving the Lord, finding purpose and fulfillment in her faith, which guided her in every aspect of her life. Her devotion to her loved ones and her community left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her children, Billy (Jean) Abbott, Robert (Rosa) Abbott and Shirley Worrell; former husband, John T. Abbott, Jr. and she was the last of her nine siblings.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Gail Goray; grandchildren, Kevin (Margaret) Worrell, Lance (Jennifer) Abbott, Lauren Worrell (Heath) Goodwin, Tracy Abbott (Ryan) Putteet, Stephanie Abbott (Jonathan) Turner, Dustin (Lauren) Walker, Matthew (Rachel) Walker, Suzanne Walker (Darrin) Turner, Shaina Edwards; twenty-four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Charles Worrell and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 2:15 p.m. at Pineview Memory Gardens in Valley Grande. Visitation will begin at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home in Selma from 1:00-2:00 p.m., prior to the service.
