Vera Jane (Butler) Huff

A true angel on Earth, Vera was born in 1934 in Rochester, NY, and departed her earthly bonds on September 12, 2023 in Vancouver, WA. She was with her husband, Jimmie and her daughter Deborah, as her light faded.

Vera was raised in the farming community of Williamson, NY. Graduating from high school in 1953, she then attended Whitworth College in Spokane, WA.

In 1955, Vera became a Stewardess for United Airlines. She was based in Seattle, flying on the DC-3, 4, 6, 7 and Convair 340. Vera also modeled and in 1956 was voted Miss Photogenic of Seattle by the Seattle Associated Press.

On April 1, 1957, Vera met United Airlines Pilot, Jimmie L. Huff. They married May 17, 1957. As United did not allow stewardesses to be married, Vera retired to the couple's first home in in Burlingame, CA where daughter Deborah was born. In 1959, the family moved to San Jose, CA, where son, Ward, was born. As Jim's flying career progressed, the family relocated to NJ and later returned to the San Francisco Bay area, settling in Los Altos. The family made friends easily, and Vera hosted many dinner parties. Over the years, the family became serious snow skiers and they spent winter weekends at Lake Tahoe, NV. During the summer months Vera played golf, and, with the rest of the family, was always on the go...camping, fishing, swimming or visiting family in MT, TX & NY. In 1974, the family moved to Reno, NV where skiing was only a few minutes from their new home. Vera continued playing golf and carded two holes-in-one. Vera also continued modeling and, at one point, graced a large billboard for Harrah's Casino. She also obtained her real estate license and was a tour guide.

Jim retired as a UAL Captain (DC-10) in 1989 and he and Vera moved to Vancouver, WA where they made their home on the golf course at Fairway Village. Vera became both the 9-hole and 18-hole champion at their new home course.

In 1997, Jim and Vera bought a condo on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. They made many close friends, played golf, enjoyed the beach and the pool. And, of course, Vera continued to host her fabulous dinner parties.

Vera is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jimmie, daughter Deborah and son Ward.

A Celebration of Life for Vera will be held on November 18th, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Fairway Village Golf Course Clubhouse, Columbia Room, 15509 SE Fernwood Dr., Vancouver, WA 98683.
