Mrs. Vera Elizabeth (England) Mallett, 87, formerly of Mallettown (Conway County), died at Heritage Living Center in Conway on Friday, March 25, 2005. Mrs. Mallett was born September 17, 1917 in Plant, AR to the late Charles C. and Veora (Hightower) England. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eber Elias Mallett who died in September of 1987; grandsons, Anthony Johnson, Pelham Meeks and Barry Myrick; brothers Eulis and Gene England; a sister, Verda Wilson; and a son-in-law, Wade Keys.

Mrs. Mallett was a member of the Mallettown United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher and was involved in the lay speakers group. She had most recently attended the Morrilton United Methodist Church.

Vera was most happy when visiting with family and friends, studying the Bible, and working with her hands to create crafts or artwork. Vera owned and operated her own beauty shop out at her home at Mallettown. She had been active in the EH Club and loved her quilting and painting, with still life being a favorite.

Mrs. Mallett received her GED in 1994, by participating in the GED-ONTV program through AETN. At age 78, she was the oldest graduate in the program at the time She had been featured in area newspapers for this accomplishment as well as recognition for her quilts, painting and other crafts. After she received her GED she took the Amtrack to Oregon, and upon return had a series of articles published in the Morrilton Headlight Newspaper relating her daily journal experiences from this trip.

Vera is survived by daughters Dora Lee Johnson and husband L. J. of North Little Rock; Betty Keys of Wooster; Peggy Myrick and husband Frank of Russellville; and Meredith Mitchell and husband, Richard of Mallettown; brothers William Earl England of Searcy, and Wesley England of New Boston, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Keys, Tammie Cannon, Dennis Johnson, Glen Keys, Tim Johnson and James "Jimmy" Myrick; six precious great-grandchildren, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 28 at the Mallettown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Dunlap officiating. Burial will follow at Mallettown Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Griffin Leggett Funeral Home, 1751 Dave Ward Dr., Conway, AR 72034, 501-327-5000.
