Verle Smith
March 12, 1933 - December 21, 2025
Verle D. Smith passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the age of 92. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2025 and fought the cancer with courage and dignity.
Verle was born to Clifford and Nellie Smith on March 12, 1933, in his grandparents' house in
Bridgeport, WA. He spent his boyhood working the wheat fields surrounding
Mansfield, WA, and attended school in Mansfield. Verle was in the Army and served time in Korea. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1955. Verle graduated from WSU in 1963 with a Veterinary Degree.
Verle married Joanne B. Rhea on December 22, 1956, in
Wenatchee, WA, and they had three children. In 1965, he, with his family in tow, moved to
Brewster, WA, where he opened a veterinary practice. Over 22 years, he treated small and large animals over a wide area of Okanogan, Douglas, and Chelan counties. He was the epitome of a country vet, available at all hours, wore out many pickups, broke many bones, and had scars to show for his efforts. He was well thought of by his clients, and many became friends. We have many memories of late-night calls to pull calves in 10-degree weather.
Verle enjoyed farming and gardening. After he retired from the veterinary business in 1987, he planted an apple orchard near
Bridgeport, WA. He was an apple farmer until he sold the orchard in 2012, when he finally retired. Another of his passions was horses and he eagerly waited for the American Triple Crown each year. He was a member and deacon of the Brewster Calvary Baptist Church for many years.
Verle is survived by his wife of 69 years Joanne B. Smith; and three children Roland (Barb) Smith of Pateros, Claudette (Stuart) McAllister of Antelope OR, Danelle (Jamie) Wallace of Kennewick, WA; his grandchildren Dylan Rice, and Kayla (Steve) Allured, great-grandchildren Maia, Logan, Lillie, and Chloe; as well as nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Keith, and granddaughter Sierra.
Verle lived a complete and fulfilled life. He took great pleasure in his many friendships and family. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as a loving father, husband, caring friend, devoted grandfather and great-grandfather.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Mansfield United Protestant Church, 130 2nd Avenue,
Mansfield, WA, with a reception to follow. His burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 115 6th Street North,
Brewster, WA 98812.
Arrangements by Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
